En este episodo de Speak English, un podcast de English Academy, Elena DiGiovanna nos enseña la diferencia entre dos sonidos similares en el inglés que son confundidos frecuentemente, y que pueden cambiar la definición de ciertas palabras. El primer sonido es /U/, un fonema que encontramos en las palabras: food y school. El segundo sonido es /ʊ/, un fonema que encontramos en palabras como: good, should y look.
Para el sonido /U/, tus labios deben estar tensos y redondeados, como si estuvieras inflando un globo. Tu lengua debe estar un poco tensa y elevada. Conoce más sobre la posición de tus labios y lengua para este sonido.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH FOR TRAVELING
I traveled to countries like Ireland and I found that everything I had learned during 20 years had served something, but not for everything I wanted. It was impossible to understand anything beyond “how are you?”. The same thing happened to me in Germany or Austria, countries in which, even though not everyone spoke English, I felt embarrassed for the same reason. And not to mention our neighbors in Portugal, who practically all of the younger population speak English. All this leads me to think that something is wrong in the official educational system for language teaching, at least in English, or at least in Andalusia (I do not know in the rest of Spain). How is it possible that, having studied English for so many years, I have not mastered it?
Having already spent a good time studying at the EOI, I have been able to see how I am forgetting English grammar and many of the words I have learned in recent years. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I do not practice the language very much, and in fact I am considering the possibility of enrolling in a course or exchanging a coffee with Erasmus students. The ideal would be to take an English course in London or anywhere else in England like Cambrigde, Oxford, Brighton or Bournemouth, or even take one in the city where I live, in Huelva. Going to London to perfect your English would be the ideal because surely you will learn much more quickly, you will acquire the best accent and a wide vocabulary and you will get a good grammatical level and conversational skills. Too bad my personal circumstances do not allow it at this time in my life.
I feel the need to continue studying English, to improve this language, both to enjoy more while traveling and for my present and future professional in conservation biology.

There are more and more technical and scientific studies that I have to immerse myself in to improve my training in the science that studies life and I feel a growing need to function effectively speaking English while traveling. Take a course wherever you are or have a coffee with young scholarship recipients that will surely be the best way to improve my English. It will undoubtedly be a good financial and emotional investment because it will bring me more happiness and personal satisfaction.

Like so many thousands of children in our country, I began to study English when I was about 10 years old (I was in the 5th year of EGB), then in high school and so on until I was in the second year of biological sciences (I was about 20 years old). Thanks to this, I was always able to function more or less well during my travels. Talking about food, asking how to get to a place or how much the excursion costs, it was always easy for me. But it is true that I was never able to establish deep conversations with local people, which after all was always one of my priorities in my travels, in fact I always tried to book a B&B (bed and breakfast) precisely for that, to talk with their owners and learn about their customs and ways of life.
Today I would like to tell you about my experience speaking English when I travel. Speaking English makes things much easier when you travel abroad, both to find information before leaving and to get around there by communicating with local people or with other travelers you meet along the way. For example; Without knowing English I would never have gotten quality information about the National Parks of India (everything was in English) and neither my fellow travelers nor I would have ever been able to select Kanha and Bandhavgarh as the first options to try our luck searching for tigers in the wild. Without knowing English, I would not have been able to converse and learn from the local people, and therefore the trip to India would never have been so extraordinary.
