Designing a setting for your character can be the key to elevate your project to another level. It is essential to take into account your references to give it a coherent and attractive visual identity. In the search for appropriate colors and lighting, look at how cinematic works such as "The Exorcist" use almost grayish purple tones to create a mysterious atmosphere. Those dull colors, in conjunction with elements in the background such as barely hinted at trees, can inspire your own design.
Orthogonal perspective plays a key role in determining the distance and depth of elements. Brighter colors can give the sense that an object is in the distance. When creating scenery, explore how to integrate this technique to give a unique dynamism to the background and highlight the silhouettes that compose it.
To start your design, you will need to set up a new document. Make sure the dimensions are 1080 by 720 pixels, considering we are designing for mobile devices. This step ensures that each element is positioned correctly on the screen.
- File -> New- Dimensions: 1080x720
It is possible to move elements such as your character and background between different work tabs. To do this, select both layers by holding down the 'Shift' key and use the move tool to transfer them. Adjust the size of the elements with commands such as Command + T
to correct their scale and position within your new document.
When planning the background of your scene, consider elements that foreshadow the environment you want to depict. Those that we hint at, such as the mountains and the forest, are essential. The key is to simplify the details to generate a sense of depth without cluttering the image.
Contrast is crucial to define the main and secondary elements. Use tools in graphic editing programs to modify the brightness and darkness of the layers. Using commands such as Control + L
, you can manage the levels on your screen and enhance the contrast, ensuring that your character stands out properly.
- Command/Control + L: Adjust Levels- Adjust the handles to manipulate dark, medium and light areas.
To assess whether the lightness levels are appropriate, close your eyes slightly and observe the design. This technique allows you to see which elements stand out and which need more work. Remember to explore different combinations to find the ideal relationship between character and background.
At the end, share your design and analyze the interaction between characters and scenery. In the comments, we can discuss your progress and continue to refine the visual style that will define your game. See you in the next lesson to continue building your project!
