To start with the process of editing and cleaning up an animation, it is essential to understand how to import our video from an anime application into Photoshop. This software offers us advanced tools to manage timelines and refine our animations frame by frame.
First, make sure you have your Photoshop document with the opacity set to 30% if necessary. Then, adjust the opacity to your convenience to improve the display as you work. This is crucial as the video needs to be precisely aligned with the reference images of your character.
Photoshop provides a powerful tool for manipulating animations through timelines. Let's see how we can activate and use this feature.
Activate Timeline: Go to the Timeline
window and click on the Create Video Timeline
button. This will allow you to see your layers organized over time, ensuring that each element is properly synchronized.
Import the video: Go to Layer > Video Layers > New Video Layer From File
. Select your exported video file from the anime application. This will add the video to your current document. You will easily identify the video layer, as it will be blue with a video icon.
Adjust the size of the video: Use Ctrl + L
or Cmd + T
to turn the video into a smart object. This will allow you to scale the video and adjust it to the dimensions you want without losing quality.
Match the animation: Adjust the size of the video to match the dimensions of the reference character in your Photoshop document.
Cleaning up and organizing your animation is critical to creating a smooth and consistent flow. Here's how to do it effectively.
Duplicate layers: Name the layer that will be your reference so you can follow the cleanup process accurately. When duplicating layers (using Ctrl + J
), make sure to move the duplicated layers to place them on top of your animation and adjust the duration.
Pose duration: Drag the end of your duplicated layers to define how long each pose will last. This is crucial to maintain a consistent rhythm in the animation.
Create multiple poses: During the refinement process, I generated eleven different poses with variations in duration. When finished, all poses should be correctly numbered and ordered for easy playback, which you can view using the spacebar.
Delete and redraw: Once they are duplicated and adjusted, delete any unnecessary strokes and start redrawing using the pencil tool.
Here are some key tips to optimize your workflow when animating in Photoshop.
Video references: It is always useful to have visual references to better understand natural movements and body dynamics. Look for readings that explain how to effectively use these references in your projects.
Experiment with pose duration: Some poses may require extended time to emphasize movements or expressions. Experiment and adjust until you find the perfect timing.
Have fun in the process and keep learning: Animation is an art that combines technical skill and creativity. Don't be discouraged if it's challenging at first; practice will lead to perfection.
Once you finish these steps, you will be ready to integrate your animation into platforms like Unity and create animated walk cycles or any other dynamics you wish to explore. Keep exploring and improving your art!
