How to create textures for your character?

Generating textures for a character is a crucial part of the design process, as it adds realism, depth and a unique aesthetic. This step, although it can be quite detailed, is made easier with the use of online tools and resources. Here's how you can do it.

What resources to use to get textures?

  • Textiles.com: This is an excellent platform for downloading high-quality textures. You can create a profile and you will have access to fifteen credits for free downloads. The page offers textures categorized by type, and this time we will use the "Fabric" category, which contains fabrics such as camouflage, embroidery, leather, cotton, among others.
  • Variety of textures: Choose textures that fit your character's materials, such as leather for pants or denim for shirts. Remember that small images are enough to apply in digital illustrations.

How to apply textures in your design?

  1. Downloading and organizing: Once you have downloaded your textures, organize them all in a folder called "textures" on your computer for easy access.

  2. Placing them on your character:

    • Incorporation into the design: drag the texture into your design file. Place the texture over the area of the character you want to cover. You can lengthen or duplicate the texture so that it adequately covers the garment.
    • Crop the texture: With the "Magic Wand" tool, select the areas to erase outside the outline of the character's garment. Be sure to rasterize the texture layers first if these are as smart objects.
  3. Unify and Edit:

    • Combining textures: merge the texture layers so that they become one with "Command-E".
    • Color change: Use "Command-U" to open the hue and saturation options to adjust the texture color. You can play with opacity and blending modes to achieve a desired result.
    • Adjust layers: Make sure that the textures are under the color and lighting layers so that they blend perfectly with the shadows and lights of the character.

How to present the textures?

  • Design a neat presentation: For a professional finish, turn off the character layer, arrange your textures inside a circle or frame on a new layer.
  • Add a gradient to the background: Using a gray gradient background can highlight textures better.
  • Label your textures: Use the text tool ("T" icon) to annotate the names of each texture on its respective circle, making identification easier.

What settings to use to optimize the display?

  • Line and text modification: Adjust the lines with the shape tools to connect the textures with the parts of the character. Use a text size and color that contrasts well with the background for clarity.
  • Color control: Change the colors of the textures according to the needs of the design to ensure that they visually correspond to the concept of your character.

In summary, creating textures may seem challenging, but with the right resources and editing techniques, you can greatly enrich your character design. Be encouraged to explore and experiment, as constant practice will improve your artistic skills!
