How to smooth the edges of your 3D model?

Welcome to a new step in the creation of your 3D lighthouse. While the basic shape is already starting to be defined, this is the ideal time to improve the details and give it a much more professional touch. In this snippet, you'll learn how to smooth the edges of your model with various techniques, making your lighthouse look more organic and appealing. Ready to see how to achieve this?

What's involved in smoothing edges?

When doing 3D modeling, many circular pieces can appear to have hard edges that take away from their naturalness. Smoothing them not only improves aesthetics, but also optimizes visualization when rendering.

  • Bevel: This technique adds an additional edge to each existing edge, allowing you to adjust the smoothness. A larger number of segments, for example, smooths more, but can increase the density of the mesh.
  • Add edges manually: Define the smoothness in a custom way by adding an "Edge Loop" where you deem it necessary, making the edges look well defined without loading the geometry so much.
  • Soften Edge: Using the object normals, this technique adjusts the angle of the light to soften the look without adding geometry, ideal for keeping the model light.

How to apply the bevel?

To apply a bevel that allows you to smooth effectively, follow these steps:

  • Select your object and use the bevel tool in the "modeling tool kit."
  • Adjust the distance and number of segments as desired. More distance and fewer segments provide a smoother, more circular edge.

When is it useful to add edges manually?

Manually adding edges is key for parts that need well-defined edges without increasing the number of polygons significantly. Simply:

  • Activate the "Edge Loop Tool."
  • Select the mode you want to work in and arrange the edges in the specific locations to properly define the edges.

What are the advantages of the Soften Edge method?

Ideal for video games, the Soften Edge method achieves a smooth effect with less geometry.

  • It uses normals to smooth without adding more detail.
  • It modifies the angle of light on the object, helping models to be lighter and render efficiently.

How to choose the best method for my project?

  • Bevel: For models that require a lot of detail but have limited impact on the final display.
  • Manual Edges: When you need to meticulously control geometry and definition.
  • Soften Edge: In projects where performance matters more than fine detail, such as video games.

In this journey of improving your model, it is essential to apply the technique that best suits your specific needs to achieve an optimal 3D model. Remember that these techniques not only improve the appearance of your model, but also optimize performance during processing and rendering, so get practicing and transform your lighthouse into a flawlessly finished masterpiece!

In your next tutorial, we will explore the creation of domes through the use of curves with NURBS. Keep exploring and perfecting your 3D modeling skills!

Agregar lados manualmente(edge loop) & suavizarlos (3)
