How to create a complete atmosphere in your illustration?

As we get into the magic of digital illustration, one of the techniques that will speed up your workflow and enrich your compositions is the use of lights, shadows and atmospheres through blending modes. These modes are essential to give life and depth to your artwork, creating subtle or dramatic contrasts and effects as you need them.

How to get started with blending modes?

Blending modes are powerful tools in illustration applications like Procreate. There are several methods to apply and manage them effectively:

  1. Layers for shadows and highlights:

    • Create a layer for shadows and choose a cool purple for a shadowy effect.
    • Use a layer for highlights and select yellows or whites to bring clarity.
  2. Modulation types:

    • Darkness: Modes such as Multiplay and Underexpose increase saturation and contrast.
    • Clarity: Modes such as Lighten or Raster can enhance highlights and decrease shadows.
    • Thus, by maneuvering the opacity you can adjust the visual intensity to your preference.

What other blending modes are there?

Exploring beyond the basics, we can find an advanced range of effects:

  1. Contrast and Sharpen:

    • Overlay: balanced combination of light and shadow, without going to the level of multiplying.
    • Soft Light and Hard Light: Allow you to create soft or dramatic contrasts, each adapting its intensity as you require.
    • Focal light: Simultaneously darkens and lightens, altering tones without losing essence.
  2. Comparison and color effects:

    • Modes such as Difference and Exclusion offer inverse or complementary effects, useful for visual aging or creative effects.
    • Color mode redefines tones without losing inherent luminosity, preserving the original feel.

Why use blend modes?

Blending modes not only speed up the process, but also enrich your work with depth and atmosphere. By understanding what effect each mode has, you can manipulate light, color and shadows with great precision, creating unique moods. Try different colors and modes to see how they transform your art - experiment and share your findings with the community, there's always something new to discover!

So why wait? Dive into this world, explore the endless possibilities of colors and shadows, and take your illustrations to the next level.
