  • Informal and formal settings

Overlap

Most situations are not just one or the other. They overlap, or are very similar for both situations. They go in between being formal and informal, so you have to deal with both of those.

Business Savvy: Formal

They…

  • May have learned English at school.
  • Are very formal
  • Knows all of the words for their job
  • Do very well at meetings where they have to explain charts and news lots of formal words

But also they…

  • Can’t handle a regular conversation properly
  • Haven’t learnd any slang
  • May sound very robotic

Discussion Ready: Informal

They…

  • May’ve learned English from their friends or the Internet
  • Are very informal
  • Know all of the slang
  • Can have a really nice conversation
  • Are a little bit too informal for work
  • Say “you guys”, “ain’t”, different things like that in a business meeting

Middle Ground: Clever Hybrid

  • They’re an expert on formal and informal situations
  • and prepare to deal with 21st century business situations

I don’t know why, but I love informal language jaja, my favorite word is “ain’t” when I learned it, I have never stopped to use it xD

There are two kinds of people: Business Savvy: Formal and Discussion Ready: Informal
We have to deal with both: formal and informal situations ** so we need to achieve the Clever hybrid: Expert in both situations!! That’s our goal.

We have to be able to find a middle ground! Clever Hybrid: Expert in formal and informal situations.

I am excited for this class

I leant English with my family, some relatives taught me the language and when I grew up I noticed I was too informal, I had to study to become a clever hybrid, and I continue learning

The 3 Ps… and the Overlap

→ Preparation

This steps overlap or are similar for formal and informal situations.

There are two types of speakers. Very formal speakers that learn English in Business school (by example) and others that speak with a lot of slang. The goal of this course is to get a clever hybrid between this two.

What i love the most about platzi are their videos, with such audio quality and short duration, It is by far the best way to learn something new, like the 3 P’s.

To listen different accents help us to improve our learning.

Learned formal English from school but I truly learned English with some folks and mates on the internet which was great to my slang and my terrible habit of reductions and such.
However, I’m aware of the formal needs so I can switch from those two. Sometimes I even use formal-informal in the same sentence and I think that I must seem pretty weird, but I don’t care as long as it’s with friends.

I have learned english before. but i didn´t know about the 3ps. now i see its importarnt and is good always keep learning

Wow, I think I would like to be a clever hybrid.

we want to be expert in both skills.

Yes!! I wanna be a clever Hybrid

We need to find the middle ground to improve or English

Excellent introduction. Overlap is a challenge but I’m anxious to know about how can do it.

We will learn the three steps of converstion: preparation, presenting and participating

go by both

Awesome! I never thought in that way. You´re great!
