How can Scrabble game improve your video editing skills?

Imagine yourself facing a challenge that is not only fun but also educational: creating letter combinations like in the game Scrabble. What if I told you that this game can improve your video editing skills? Through a similar exercise, you can increase your ability to create more meaningful and effective visual combinations. Let's find out how applying this game to video editing can be useful for your professional development.

How does the exercise work?

The basic idea is to develop your speed and mental dexterity to create visual combinations just as you would with words in Scrabble. The exercise consists of the following:

  • Ask you to take a paper and pencil to jot down ideas.
  • Allow seven letters and thirty seconds to form as many words as possible.
  • The words can vary in length, from two to seven letters.
  • You can use repeated letters and even form words in different languages.

This apparent game is actually a symbolic representation of editing, where from limited elements you generate multiple creative combinations.

What benefits does it bring to video editing?

It seems that this game is not directly related to editing, but it has a significant impact:

  1. Quick decision making: In thirty seconds, you exercise your mind to react quickly, vital in video editing where quick decisions are key.

  2. Variety in representation: As with words, you can create multiple versions of a scene using the same clips, bringing diversity and creativity.

  3. Certainty and confidence: You will increase your ability to mentally envision combinations, which prepares you to enter the timeline with greater confidence in your decisions.

How can you apply this exercise in video editing?

This exercise is not only a mental game, but a practical technique that you can take into the world of video editing. Here are some recommendations for implementing this concept:

Create multiple versions of a scene.

Use available footage to experiment. From the same set of clips, try to build diverse narratives, just like you create different words with the same letters:

  • Contrasting versions: Make one lighthearted and one more dramatic version using similar elements but altering the sequence or music.

  • Changing approaches: Experiment with different angles and shots within the same scene to highlight various aspects of the story.

Share and collaborate

  • Discussion and feedback: Share your versions in a panel discussion or with colleagues to get valuable feedback.

  • Mutual learning: Comment on each other's work and learn by observing how each editor creates their own unique combinations.

Mindset exercises.

Spend time regularly doing visualization and combination exercises, even if you're not in front of a computer. Imagine the possible combinations of your clips and evaluate different ways to tell the story.

By exploring this exercise, you will recognize the implicit connection between all creative acts, especially in video editing. This playful, hands-on approach will allow you to better understand how small pieces can generate big stories - keep exploring and expand your creative horizons!

Aquí esta mi trabajo de la clase, decidí hacer 2 versiones, pues al haber utilizado una buena cantidad de clips en ambos, no sentí que una 3 versión pudiera aportar mucho. :)) <https://youtu.be/5tjeLj7W_yw>
