Here are my notes of the lesson. 👇

  • Topic sentence
  • Supporting sentences
  • Concluding sentence

“PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE BASIC STRUCTURE”

A paragraph consists of sentences about one topic. The most important sentence in a paragraph is the topic sentence . It is often (though not always) the first sentence, and it introduces, states, or summarizes the topic of a paragraph. For example: Workaholics lead unbalanced lives. In formal or academic writing, all the supporting sentences that follow, surround, or precede a topic sentence—details, examples, and other facts—must be related to the topic presented in the topic sentence. If the last sentence of a paragraph isn’t its topic sentence, and especially if the paragraph is a long one, writers sometimes end it with a concluding sentence that restates the topic sentence or summarizes the paragraph. Concluding sentences commonly use phrases such as In conclusion or In summary.

A paragraph is defined as the unity and coherence of ideas among sentences is what constitutes a paragraph. “a group of sentences or a single sentence that forms a unit” (Lunsford and Connors 116).

# **Understanding the Structure of a Paragraph** Welcome to the first class of this module! In this lesson, we will explore the concept of a paragraph, its structure, and how to construct one effectively. By the end of this module, you will have a clear understanding of how to build a strong paragraph step by step. ## **What is a Paragraph?** A paragraph is a group of related sentences that work together to express a single idea. It serves as a fundamental building block in writing, much like a sandwich, where different layers come together to create a complete and meaningful structure. ### **The Paragraph as a Sandwich** To better understand a paragraph’s composition, we can compare it to a sandwich: * **The Bread (Topic and Concluding Sentences):** These form the structure of the paragraph, just like the bread holds a sandwich together. * **The Fillings (Supporting Sentences):** These are the details, explanations, and examples that give flavor and depth to the paragraph. ## **The Three Essential Parts of a Paragraph** A well-structured paragraph consists of three main types of sentences: ### **1. The Topic Sentence** The topic sentence is the foundation of a paragraph. It introduces the main idea and sets the tone for what the reader should expect. A strong topic sentence should be: * **Clear:** It should state the main idea concisely. * **Specific:** It should not be too broad or too narrow. * **Engaging:** It should capture the reader’s interest. #### *Example:* *"Exercise is essential for maintaining good health."* This sentence clearly introduces the paragraph’s main idea: the importance of exercise. ### **2. The Supporting Sentences** These sentences provide evidence, explanations, or examples to reinforce the topic sentence. They form the "body" of the paragraph and should: * **Explain:** Provide more details about the topic. * **Give Examples:** Offer real or hypothetical examples to illustrate the point. * **Use Facts or Opinions:** Support the argument with logic, data, or personal insights. #### *Example:* * *"Regular exercise helps to strengthen the heart and lungs, improving cardiovascular health."* * *"Studies show that people who engage in physical activity have lower stress levels and better mental health."* These sentences support the idea presented in the topic sentence by providing reasons and evidence. ### **3. The Concluding Sentence** The concluding sentence wraps up the paragraph by summarizing the main idea or offering a final thought. A strong conclusion should: * **Restate the main idea** in different words. * **Provide a sense of closure** to the paragraph. * **Lead into the next paragraph**, if applicable. #### *Example:* *"By incorporating regular exercise into our daily routine, we can enjoy both physical and mental benefits."* This sentence reinforces the main point while smoothly concluding the paragraph. ## **Building Your Own Paragraph** In the next lessons, we will explore each of these elements in more detail. You will learn how to write strong topic sentences, develop meaningful supporting sentences, and craft effective concluding sentences. ## **Conclusion** A paragraph is like a sandwich, with different layers working together to create a complete and meaningful unit of writing. By understanding the three essential sentence types—topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences—you can construct clear and effective paragraphs. Stay tuned for the next class, where we will dive deeper into each layer of the paragraph and practice building strong, cohesive writing!
A paragraph consists of three main types of sentences: 1. **Topic Sentence**: This is the main idea of the paragraph. 2. **Supporting Sentences**: These sentences provide details and evidence to support the topic sentence. 3. **Concluding Sentence**: This wraps up the paragraph and reinforces the main idea. Understanding these components will help you construct effective paragraphs in your writing.
💪🏽🧠
A paragraph is a distinct section of written text that focuses on a single idea or topic. It is typically a group of sentences that work together to convey a complete thought or message. The main elements of a well-structured paragraph are: 1. Topic Sentence: The topic sentence introduces the main idea or focus of the paragraph. It often appears at the beginning of the paragraph. 2. Supporting Details: These are the sentences that provide additional information, explanations, examples, or evidence to support the topic sentence. 3. Concluding Sentence: This sentence summarizes the main point of the paragraph or transitions to the next paragraph. Paragraphs serve several important functions in writing: * They help organize ideas and make the text more readable and coherent. * They guide the reader through the progression of the writer's thoughts. * They allow the writer to develop a single idea or concept in depth before moving on to the next one. * They create visual breaks in the text, making it easier for the reader to process the information. The length of a paragraph can vary, but generally, a well-developed paragraph should contain between 3 to 8 sentences. Shorter paragraphs can be used for emphasis or to transition between ideas, while longer paragraphs are appropriate for more complex topics that require more detailed exploration.

TOPIC SENTENCE: Climate change is a pressing global issue that requires immediate attention.

SUPPORT SENTENCES:

Rising global temperatures have resulted in numerous detrimental effects on the planet. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, leading to rising sea levels and increased risks of coastal flooding.
Additionally, extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and droughts, have become more frequent and severe, causing significant damage to ecosystems and human lives.
Furthermore, climate change has disrupted agricultural patterns, resulting in reduced crop yields and food shortages in many regions, exacerbating poverty and hunger.
CONCLUDING SENTENCE: It is imperative that governments, communities, and individuals take proactive measures to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable practices to ensure a habitable planet for future generations.

I loved the metaphor of the sandwich!

Thank you very much, and I will be very attentive.

I want to learn english. I get a job with my new language.

Let’s start to understand what a paragraph is. We can compare a paragraph to a sandwich. It has different layers, but in the paragraph, these layers are the prayers. In a basic paragraph, there are three different types of sentences. They are the topic sentence, the subject of your paragraph; the prayers of support,

Those are sentences that support the idea of the topic; and the final prayer, the conclusion of your paragraph.
