Envelopes are key in sound design. They allow to determine the behavior of the sound volume through three fundamental moments: attack, decay and release. Let's go deeper into this concept and learn how to apply it in a practical way to achieve innovative sound effects.
An envelope determines the evolution of the volume of a sound over time. It comprises the following phases:
Working with envelopes in Reaper allows you to create fascinating sound effects, such as the characteristic "whohos" for transitions or character actions.
Initial export: Be sure to export a helicopter sound or your sound base. Use macros and shortcuts for error-free file naming and selection.
Control + Alt + R
Easy automation: Name your export files using variables that take the track name automatically.
Duplication and customization: Duplicate existing tracks and apply a color palette to visually organize your audio tracks.
White noise is an excellent raw material for experimenting with envelopes and creating custom sounds. Some techniques include:
Initial Fades: Create fades at the beginning and end of your track to shape the attack and release of the sound.
Volume adjustment: Manipulate the peak of the sound wave by adjusting the volume and shape of the waveform.
Zoom and fine-tune: Zoom in to see specific details of the sound and be sure to edit along the zero point line.
Curves and equalization: Select different types of curves and apply equalization to modify the character of the sound according to your needs.
Band four, equalizer type, low pass filter, low pass filter.
Use stretching and adjustment on the sound wave to achieve specific effects, such as:
Robotic effects: By stretching a wave a lot, you can create futuristic and robotic sounds by altering the intonation in a controlled way.
Creative exploration: Take advantage of these effects for sounds in science fiction or video game universes that need immersive and futuristic elements.
As a practical challenge, I invite you to select a video game character and develop a "Hush" sound effect that matches their style and abilities. Share your creation and explore new sound design possibilities.
Get ready to dive into new sound design challenges that will test your creativity and technical ability. We will create complex sounds, but don't worry, you will advance step by step through a fun and enriching learning experience. Go ahead, platzinauta!
