The concept of new masculinities refers to the evolution of men's traditional roles in society. Just as women's roles have changed over time, so have men's roles, giving rise to new ways of being a man. These new forms of masculinity are known as positive masculinities or hybrid masculinities.
Importance of positive and hybrid masculinities
Positive masculinities and hybrid masculinities are not presented as something completely new, but rather as the incorporation of non-hegemonic elements that generate new models and relationships. These new forms of masculinity seek to break with traditional stereotypes and explore new forms of expression of masculinity.
The gender perspective, as defined by the UN Women guide, is a way of analyzing the impact of gender on people's opportunities, social roles and interactions. By applying this perspective to masculinity, we can observe the pressure placed on boys and men to conform to specific roles. Masculinity, therefore, is socially, politically and historically constructed, beyond being biologically determined.
It is important to emphasize that new forms of masculinity are not limited exclusively to men, as women also play an important role in the construction and production of the meaning and practices of masculinity.
Transformations in new masculine identities
Now, what are some of the transformations that accompany these new masculine identities and what do they imply?
-
Breaking the link between masculinity and violence: One of the fundamental transformations is to decouple the idea of masculinity from violence. Traditionally, masculinity has been associated with being strong, dominant and aggressive. However, it is essential to break with this stereotype and promote a masculinity based on respect, empathy and care.
-
Change the way power is exercised: Instead of perpetuating a masculinity based on dominant power, it is necessary to promote a more cooperative and equitable masculinity. This implies abandoning the idea that men should be in control and learning to share and cede spaces of power.
-
Improving communication: An important transformation involves fostering open and affective communication among men. Breaking with the stereotype that men should be strong and emotionally indifferent, and promoting healthy communication skills, contributes to a better relationship with themselves and with others.
-
Sharing household responsibilities: New masculinities also involve sharing household responsibilities equally. This means that men should take on tasks that have traditionally been considered "women's work" and thus remove gender barriers that limit women's opportunities.
-
Ensuring equal access to opportunities: Another important transformation of the new masculinities is to actively work to achieve equal access to opportunities for all, regardless of gender. This involves promoting equal pay, equal employment and educational opportunities, among other aspects.
The new masculinities seek to create a change in the way masculinity is understood and exercised. Breaking with gender stereotypes allows men to live in accordance with their own identities, freeing them from unfair social expectations and pressures. By promoting a more positive and equitable masculinity, it contributes to the construction of a more egalitarian and just society for all.
