We all love to receive gifts. Accepting a gift not only generates satisfaction in the giver, but is also a gift in itself for the receiver. Now, we will explore how the gift game combines listening, improvisation and the concept of yes-and-yes, and how it can help us expand our skills in these areas.

How does the gift game work?

The gift game is a dynamic that combines eye contact, mime and imagination. It can be played either in person or through platforms such as Zoom. The objective is to select a person and establish a visual link with them, making it clear to them that they are being chosen for the game.

Once eye contact is established, you must mime a mime that represents approximately 50% of an imaginary object you are giving away. Why only 50%? The reason is to allow the other person to use his or her imagination to complete the object as desired.

For example, if you mime bouncing something, the person is likely to think of a ball. However, if you perform another type of movement, you will let the person's imagination define the object and its use. This is the goal of the game.

The next step is to say, "I give this to you." The recipient thanks you for the gift and may say something like, "Thank you for giving me a blue tablecloth." What the person says will define the object and its usefulness. The person who gave the gift responds, "Thank you for accepting it." This theatrical dynamic expands the range of improvisation and the concept of yes-and-yes.

Improvisation and the power of yes-and-yes

Having solid improvisation skills and knowing how to apply the yes-and-yes concept allows us to make better decisions in different situations. Sometimes, it is even better to make a bad decision than no decision at all. Improvisation helps us to think quickly and adapt to change, while yes-and-yes pushes us to accept what is presented to us and build on it.
