Uso de "Whether" e "If" en Preguntas de Sí/No

Whether e if son dos conjunciones que utilizadas para reportar preguntas del tipo yes or no. Por ejemplo:

• Would you like to know if / whether the train has arrived? (La respuesta será sí o no)

La diferencia entre ambas, radica en que whether se utiliza cuando se presentan dos alternativas que son posibles o cuando existe más de una alternativa.

• Let me know whether she arrives. (Avísame si ella llega o no)
• Let me know if she arrives. (Avísame solo si llega, de lo contrario no)

Ejemplos usando if y whether

• Would you like to know whether she’s free?
• Please let me know if she is free.
• Q: Are you coming to the cinema with us?
  A: I don’t know whether / if I can go. I have a lot of work.
• Q: Did she join the meeting?
  A: I’m not sure whether / if she joined the meeting.
