Subgroups

14/24
Resources

Subgroups are terms that you can introduce when communicating in English to choose something among different possibilities or to name, within a sentence, elements of a group of people/things.

Imagine you are at the cinema and you ask your partner if he/she would prefer to eat now or after the movie. To express this sentence and the different options, there are four words to talk about subgroups in English.

  • Either - either
  • Neither - none
  • Each - each one
  • All - everyone

Either

Either is a word that is used to choose between two possibilities.

  • We can either eat now or after the movie. It's up to you.
  • Q: Would you like pork or fish?
A: Thanks, but I don't like either of them.

Neither

Neither is a word that refers to no choice between two people or things. The sentence should be in the positive and the verb should be conjugated in the third person singular.

  • My parents live in Colombia, neither of them lives in the USA.

Each

Each is a word that refers to an individual element of a group. The verb will be conjugated in the third person singular.

  • Each of us likes pizza.
  • Each of the siblings has a different personality.
each (1).png

All

All is a word that refers to all the elements of a group.

  • All of us agree with you.
  • All of them are tired.
