Ejemplos incluyen "who" (quién), "which" (cual) y "that" (eso).

Observemos un ejemplo clásico: "Michael Jackson was a singer who wrote the song 'Billie Jean'." Aquí, "who" conecta ambas ideas sin repetir "Michael Jackson".

  1. "She lives in an old house which was built in 1954." — Aquí "which" se refiere a "house", un objeto.
  2. "This is Jack whom you met at the party."
  3. "This is Emily whose sister studied with me."
  4. "Did you see the email which we received yesterday?"

¿Cómo conectamos ideas usando pronombres relativos especiales?

  • When: Para hablar de tiempo. Ejemplo: "There isn't a day when I don't feel tired."
  • Where: Para lugares. Ejemplo: "I know a restaurant where the food is really tasty."
  • Why: Para razones. Ejemplo: "I don't know the reason why you are always late."

Who or whom? English speakers know that there’s a difference between these pronouns, but they aren’t sure what that difference is. When I’m in doubt, I use this trick: if you can replace the word with “he”’ or “’she,” use who and if you can replace it with “him” or “her,” use whom.
I hope this helps you.

Note could help us

A relative clause will give us information about the person or thing mentioned. Usually they are words as: who, whom, which, that, when, where or whose. But also could be an adverb.

For instance, These are the flights that have been cancelled.

Omitting the relative pronoun, sometime we can leave out eh relative pronoun; who, which or that if it is followed by a subject.

The assistant [that] we met was really kind.
(we = subject, can omit that).

However, but if the relative pronoun is followed by a verb, you mustn’t omit.

The assistant that helped us was really kind.
(helped = verb, can’t omit that).

relative pronouns because there are different types of relative pronouns.
We have three main categories. Relative pronouns can be subject relative pronouns, object relative pronouns, or possessive relative pronouns.
relative pronouns that speak of subjects refer to the individuals who perform the action. are (Who), (Which) and (That)
Object relative pronouns refer to people, elements or agents that receive the action. (Who) can also be used in place of (To whom) and in the opposite direction.
Possessive relative pronouns speak of the possession that a person has over one thing or one thing over another thing. (Whose).
