• SUMMARY:
  Causative verbs are actions that cause something else to happen, that provoke something else to happen or that prevent or allow something else to happen.
  They are not unique actions, they’re usually together with another action that they provoke or forced to happen.
  LET, MAKE, HELP and GET are the causative verbs more used.
  LET: when we want to talk about permissions that someone gives to someone or something.
  Let + the element that you’re talking about + the action. I let the dogs play outside in the morning. My parents don’t let me play video games. You’re providing your permission.
  MAKE: when you force something to happen. The structure is pretty much the same.
  Make + the element + the action. My girlfriend made me watch that movie, I didn’t want to but she forced me to watch that movie. Lucy made me do the presentation over.
  HELP: when you offer assistance. When you provide any assistance or any help. The constructor is the same again.
  Help + element + action. No TO or ING for the connection. They helped me carry the boxes. This music helps me study.
  You don’t say they help me to carry, it sounds strange. But it’s optional to use the preposition TO.
  GET: when you convince someone or something to happen or to do something else. This one is a little different than the others because we need to use the preposition TO. It 's not optional.
  Get + element + TO + action. I got my sister to take the picture for free. How can we get them to arrive on time? (How can I convince them to arrive on time?).
  There are actually more causative verbs in English but we are going to focus on these four.

We use a causative verb when we want to talk about something that someone else did for us or for another person. It means that the subject caused the action to happen, but didn’t do it themselves. Maybe they paid, or asked, or persuaded the other person to do it.

Causative verbs are actions that cause or provoke something else to happen. The most common are let, make, help and get.
