Recursos

A veces tenemos la necesidad de repetir lo que otra persona ha dicho. Ya sea porque estamos de acuerdo con su idea, o debemos retransmitir su mensaje a otras personas.

Cómo usar el discurso indirecto con infinitivos

Repetir lo que otra persona ha dicho puede sernos muy útil en situaciones donde queremos transmitir una idea que no es nuestra. Para lograrlo, podemos utilizar la forma “Verb (past) + to Verb (infinitive)”.

  • My mother asked me to bring her a soda.
  • John agreed to do it if he got paid extra.

Veamos una serie de verbos en infinitivo que puedes usar para retransmitir mensajes:

agree to hope to
claim to offer to
decide to prefer to
demand to promise to
threaten to refuse to

Ejemplos de discurso indirecto con infinitivos

Veamos algunos ejemplos retransmitiendo mensajes:

Mensaje original Retransmisión
Obama: -”I will improve healthcare.” Obama promised to improve health care.
Marta: -”I hope we win the match.” Marta hopes to win the match.
Salesman: -“I can give you a 5% discount.” The salesman offered to lower the price 5%.
Judge: -“I need to see the evidence.” The judge demanded to see the evidence.

Expresar ideas que no te pertenecen te ayudará a comunicarte mejor y trasmitir mensajes o ideas de otras personas.

Dear Mr. Johnson. The following email is to report what the customer said regarding the sale of several of our machines. One of the customers demanded to see the machines up and running before completing the purchase.
Another preferred to pay in cash and decided to wait for us to give him a bigger discount. The last customer agreed to buy 5, but refused to leave their contact details. Le pregunté a ChatGPT por la duda del ejemplo de Marta: The sentence "Marta: 'I hope we win the match'" is reported as "Marta hopes to win the match" because the reporting verb (hopes) remains in the present tense to match the present tense of the original verb (hope) in Marta's direct speech. In reported speech, the tense of the reporting verb can change based on the context of the sentence and when the reporting occurs. If Marta's hope is still relevant or true at the time of reporting, it's common to keep the present tense: * **Direct Speech:** Marta: "I hope we win the match." * **Reported Speech:** Marta hopes to win the match. (if the hope is still current) However, if the reporting happens after the time when Marta made the statement, and the focus is on reporting what she said at that past time, then you might use the past form of the verb: * **Direct Speech:** Marta: "I hope we win the match." * **Reported Speech:** Marta hoped to win the match. (focusing on the past statement) In summary, using the present tense "hopes" reflects that Marta's hope is still current or relevant at the time of reporting, while using the past tense "hoped" would place the emphasis on when Marta originally made the statement.
