En inglés, todas las oraciones pueden ser voz activa o pasiva. A continuación veremos cada una de ellas.

Qué es voz activa y qué es voz pasiva

  • En voz activa (active voice), el sujeto que realiza la acción del verbo que está al comienzo de la oración.

  • En voz pasiva (passive voice), el objeto que recibe la acción está al comienzo de la oración y su estructura está formada por el uso del verbo to be seguido del verbo en past participle.

Ejemplos voz activa y pasiva

Observa el siguiente ejemplo, con el mismo sujeto y objeto en diferente orden:

  • Active voice: He washes the car. (Sujeto: He)
  • Passive voice: The car is washed (by him). (Objeto: the car)

En voz pasiva puedes especificar el sujeto o dejarlo implícito, eso significan los paréntesis en (by him).

Otro ejemplo:

  • Active voice: Katie opens the main gate at 9AM everyday.
  • Passive voice: The main gate is opened at 9AM every day (by Katie).

¿Por qué debería usar voz pasiva?

Las razones para utilizar la voz pasiva son:

  • El sujeto es irrelevante
  • El sujeto es desconocido
  • No quieres decir quién o qué es el sujeto
  • Quieres centrarte en el objeto y no en el sujeto
  • Verdades generales

Contextos comunes para usar voz pasiva

Los siguientes contextos son situaciones en la que utilizar voz pasiva es una buena idea:

  • Artículos científicos
  • Documentos legales
  • Noticieros y periódicos
  • Presentaciones formales

We use the active voice when the subject is not so important, the it does not need to be mentioned in something.

Active voice: we say that a phrase is in an active voice when the subject of the sentence performs the action to which the verb refers.

It is when the subject that performs the action that appears first in the sentence, for example “He washes the car every day” (he) is the one who is executing the action.

It is when the subject that performs the action that appears first in the sentence, for example “He washes the car every day” (he) is the one who is executing the action

the active voice: it is when the subject who performs the action appears first in the sentence.

We use the active voice to make sentences in which the subject performs the action.
