As we saw before, the great amount of job offers are not public, but in the networks of contacts. Therefore, let's see how to contact the key people of the organizations to which we want to apply.
1. Inmail message
You should keep in mind that you can only use Inmail if the person you are writing to has LinkedIn premiun. Therefore, use it when you can.
Example of an Inmail message
Hi Freddy,
I hope you are well,
I've been following you for a long time on social media, especially YouTube. You have very good videos on how to find your first job, "Why it is important to have a personal brand", among other related topics. They are very much in line with my work philosophy.
I don't know if you already offer that, but I thought it would be interesting to create a course on Platzi to get your career off the ground.
I am a Head Hunter and Career Coach, I have more than 7 years of experience accompanying young leaders and entrepreneurs around the world. Especially in Latam and Europe.
I would love to tell you more.
I look forward to your feedback!
2. Connect + add a note
Sending a message with the request to connect is the most common way to contact another person, the only limitation is the number of characters, since we can only write 300.
6-point email technique
With the 6-point email technique, you can create a short and concise message where you can make contact with the person you are interested in through a short message.
- 75 words
- What do you have in common?
- Ask for advice, NOT work
- Make your request in the form of a question
- Synthesis
- 50% + of the message about the contact
Example of connecting + adding a note
Some examples, from which we can draw inspiration to create our own messages are:
- Hi BBB, I see we have some contacts in common and the same passion for talent development. I'm working on XX and one of the clients I work with is YYY. I'd love to hear more about your experience at YYYY, would you have time for a virtual coffee?
- Hi CCC, I see we have a common passion for sustainable product development. I love where YYYY is heading with its new electric proposition and would love to be part of this new era. I'd like to know more about your vision for the industry and the new development projects on your team. Do you have time for a virtual coffee next week?
- "Hi Jeff, I'm Brooke, also an MBA alumni ('21) from DUKE, could we talk for a few minutes about your product management experience at Red Hat? I'm trying to learn more about the area of product management in the tech ecosystem in North Carolina and would really appreciate your insights. Regards, Brooke"
Read this bonus
As a bonus to connect with more people on LinkedIn, what you can do is share articles of value to generate interaction and recognition in your industry.
When you get a certification or experience that you previously needed to get a job at a startup or company, you need to communicate it so employers can take notice.
Make comments of value in publications of our interest so that people keep us in their minds.
