Uso de "on/at the point of" para eventos inminentes en inglés

14/21
Recursos

Hablar de la inmediatez con la que se producirá un evento te permite expresar acciones que están a minutos de suceder o resultados que están a punto de concretarse.

Cómo hablar de eventos inminentes

Para expresar que un evento está a punto de suceder, puedes hacer uso de la expresión “on the point of” o “at the point of” seguido de un verbo en su forma -ing. Ambas expresiones son muy similares y más formales. Te permiten reemplazar la palabra “about” que también se suele utilizar para hablar de que algo está por suceder.

Veamos algunos ejemplos: - The company was at the point of bankruptcy. - He was at the point of quitting. - We were on the point of leaving when Mike arrived. - She was on the point of going to bed. - They were at the point of going to bed.

Expresa con este sencillo vocabulario esa acción que te encuentras a punto de realizar o ese evento que está a punto de suceder.

SUMMARY:
ON/AT THE POINT OF or ABOUT TO are used to talk about imminent results or events.
They mean the exact same thing. The difference is very subtle and no one is going to be upset about it. So it’s a very negligible difference.
We use ON/AT THE POINT OF we use the normal VERB in ING (doing something) or something (collapse).
After ABOUT we use the VERB in INFINITIVE FORM, so we have to add TO .

  • For example: the sentence “he was about to quit” means the exact same thing as “he was on the point of quitting”.

  • Another example is: “the economy was about to collapse” means the same as “the economy was at/on the point of collapse”.
