We use “I wish / If only” to express and unlikely or impossible desire or a regret.

• “I wish / If only” + past simple (Impossible desires in the present)
• “I wish / If only” + past perfect (Regrets about the past)
• “I wish / If only” + would / could (Desire that we believe are unlikely to happen)

If only I had studied English more younger

  For instance: “I WISH / IF ONLY I” lived in a big house (I don’t live in a big house in the present so this is a desire).
