How to verify Google Analytics 4 integration in Shopify?

Verifying that the Google Analytics 4 (GA4) integration into Shopify has been done correctly is vital to monitoring the performance of your online store. We will explore how to ensure that GA4 is sending information correctly, using tools such as the Google Analytics Debugger. This will ensure that data from your pages, except for the checkout process, is properly tracked.

How do we initially set up Google Analytics 4?

  1. Initial setup: We have implemented Google Analytics 4 code in our Shopify store to track entries on product listing and product detail pages (PLP and PDP).
  2. Limitations: You cannot edit the checkout in standard Shopify, as it requires a Shopify Plus account, which costs at least $2000. Also, we discuss how we can verify and eventually include the code in the post-purchase thank you page.

What is the Google Analytics Debugger?

The Google Analytics Debugger is a Chrome extension that allows us to visualize in a more detailed way the information sent to Google Analytics in real time.

How to install the Google Analytics Debugger?

  1. Search for the extension: Go to the Chrome browser and search for "Google Analytics Debugger" in Google.
  2. Install: Add the extension to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Enable the extension: Once installed, enable the extension to start receiving data.

How to use Google Analytics Debugger to verify data?

  1. Sign in to Google Analytics 4: Sign in to your account and navigate to the real-time reports section.
  2. Real-time data comparison: You can see if visits are being recorded in real time, even check in detail each page view sent from the store.
  3. Detailed information: When you enable Google Analytics Debugger, it refreshes your Shopify page and reviews the hits sent. You can get specific information about each visited product, see aspects such as page location and page title.

What are the benefits of this functionality?

  • Accuracy and control: Allows accurate verification of data sent from Shopify to GA4.
  • Data exploration: Provides a comprehensive view of the user journey on the page, which is ideal for optimizing the user experience.
  • Future focus: Allows you to move forward with installing code on the "thank you page" to further track post-purchase transactions.

We encourage you to investigate and explore these tools to improve data collection in your online store. Each new feature in Google Analytics 4 is an opportunity to better understand your customers and enhance your marketing and sales strategies. Remember that constant learning and adaptability are key in the digital environment - good luck as you continue to improve your Shopify store!
