Uso del Reported Speech en Inglés: Cambios en Tiempos Verbales

Recursos

Simple present Simple past
Present continuous Past continuous
Simple past Past perfect
Present perfect Past perfect
Past perfect Past perfect
Present perfect continuous Past perfect continuous
Past continuous Past perfect continuous
Future Present conditional
Future continuous Conditional continuous

Ejemplos de cómo usar reported speech

Veamos algunos ejemplos:

  • Mensaje: I am not drinking coffee this morning, I am feeling bad.
  • Retransmisión: She said she wasn’t drinking coffee this morning, she was feeling bad.

  • Mensaje: We will travel to Buenos Aires the next week.
  • Retransmisión: He said they would travel to Buenos Aires the next week.

  • Mensaje: We went to the scene of the crime yesterday.

2. Directo: Juan preguntó: "¿Cómo estás?" Discurso relatado: Juan preguntó cómo estaba. * Pregunta: ¿Qué preguntó Juan? * Respuesta: Juan preguntó cómo estaba. **Ejemplos en inglés:** 1. Directo: Sarah said, "I am going to the park." Discurso relatado: Sarah said that she was going to the park. * Pregunta: What did Sarah say? * Respuesta: Sarah said that she was going to the park. 2. Directo: Tom asked, "What time is it?" Discurso relatado: Tom asked what time it was. * Pregunta: What did Tom ask? * Respuesta: Tom asked what time it was.
My question is... How can i guess the context of the direct speech in some cases? Lets take the example "We have been waiting for a long time". The reported version is "They complained" how do I know they actually complained? Couldn't I say "They said they had been waiting for a long time"? This got me confused.
* She said the president would travel there next month. * She said the summit meeting had been shechuled to take place during the weekend. * She express that she was expecting the leaders to arrive soon.

( ***she said*** the president would travel there next month). * she said the summit meeting has been scheduled to take place during the weekend. ( ***she explained that*** the summit meeting ***had*** been scheduled to take place during the weekend). * she said of that she was expecting the leaders to arrive soon (correct).

Very good

There are two things that mainly change when we convert from direct speech to reported speech in a sentence:

  1. verb tenses: they refer to the past of the verb tenses of the original sentence.
  2. the pronouns: all the pronouns that are in the first and second person (I, you, we) in the original sentence, are transferred to the third person.
  • She said the president would travel there next month.
  • She said the summit meeting had been scheduled to take place during the weekend.
  • She explained that she was expecting the leaders to arrive soon.

She said the president would travel there next month
(She explained that)She said that the summit meeting had been schedule to take place during the weekend.

If we want to be fluent is important to know the structures and rules

  1. Present simple, past simple, present perfect, past perfect… and so on. English is easier when we have these basics clear.
  1. The journalist said the president would travel there next month
  2. She said the summit meeting had been (remember that simple past changes into past perfect was ➡️ Had been) scheduled to take place during the weekend.
  3. “I am expecting the leaders to arrive soon” Present continuous ➡️ past continuous, "She said that she *
was expecting** the leaders to arrive soon
