Myths are imaginary beliefs that give unnecessary value to things, altering their true and qualities. The way to confront them is by understanding their logic, to leave them behind.
5 myths about learning English
Unfortunately, these beliefs can create limits to learning English that unconsciously self-sabotage our learning. Here are some common myths.
I'm too old to learn English
You can learn English at any age, because the brain has not stopped developing thanks to a characteristic called neural plasticity that allows us to build new skills. It is believed that children have a greater predisposition to learn, the reason being that they are not afraid to make mistakes and this is something we should replicate as young people or adults.
2. Learning English takes too long
The time it takes to learn English is quite variable because it all depends on the student, their motivation, dedication and resources to learn something new.
3. I need to be in an English-speaking country to learn English.
Being in an English-speaking country would give you many advantages, but if you are just learning English it is likely to be frustrating, and the resources to be in another country would be unaffordable. Thanks to globalization you can easily immerse yourself in another culture with technology.
- Read in English
- Watch movies in English
- Adjust your computer's operating system in English.
- Listen to music in English
You can even practice English with English language learners or even native speakers on some internet platforms.
4. I am not good at languages
Of course there are people with a facility for learning English, just like anywhere else. This does not mean that we cannot reach a sufficient level to get by in a work or casual environment in English.
5. Accents are difficult to imitate
Instead of being embarrassed by our accent, we should be proud to be communicating in a different language. Remember that every accent tells a different story about a person's background and makes them unique and pronunciation can be developed.
Conclusion
In summary, myths can be as powerful as we allow them to be and these can greatly affect our growth in any skill.
