Hello everybody, here my exercise: 1\. You are in a business meeting and the person chairing the meeting is getting ready to move on to the next item on the agenda but you have something you want to add. A: OK! So if there aren’t any other comments, let’s move on to the next item… B: Alex before you move on, I want to add something to the discussion. It is essential to have a daily follow-up of the advance of the planned activities to ensure the best possible go live. We can't miss this follow-up because of the experience and learned lessons in our last Project. 2\. You’re having a friendly discussion with some friends when one of them says something you don’t agree with… A: The Godfather II is a hundred times better than the original! B: Excuse me, I can´t let you go with that. All Godfather movies were good, because of the consistency of the story. Sorry but I have to disagree with you. 3\. You’re at the bus terminal and need to ask someone there where the ticket counter is but they’re involved in a long conversation with someone else. It’s critical that you speak to them right now! A: I don’t mind sharing, but I hope you like long stories because this is one of them. B: Pardon me for interrupt, but I can´t find the ticker counter and I think I´m running out of time 4\. I´m so sorry to interrupt you,but I promise to call you back soon. 5\. You’re at a medical appointment talking to your doctor who is explaining something to you about your medical history when you notice that he has someone else’s folder in his hands. A: Based on your history, it’s really important that you avoid eating too much sugar. B: Excuse me Doc, before you move on, I think you have the wrong files because that´s not my name.
Good night professor and here I'll share my conversation meeting. **John:** So, as I was saying, the new project plan involves shifting our focus to digital marketing strategies. **Emily:** Pardon me, but I would like to add an important point. While digital marketing is crucial, we shouldn't completely abandon traditional marketing methods, as they still reach a significant portion of our target audience. **John:** That's a valid point, Emily. We should consider a balanced approach. Now, let's move on to the budget allocation for these strategies. **Mark:** Before you move on, I would like to make an important point. We need to ensure that we allocate enough resources for data analysis. Understanding the metrics will help us optimize both our digital and traditional marketing efforts effectively. **John:** Absolutely, Mark. Data analysis is key to our success. We will allocate a portion of our budget specifically for that. Now, about the timeline... **Emily:** Sorry to interrupt again, but I think we should also include a review phase in our timeline. This will allow us to assess our strategies and make adjustments as needed. **John:** Good idea, Emily. A review phase will help us stay flexible and responsive to changes. Let's incorporate that into the timeline. Now, back to the specific tasks and deadlines...
I liked the activity very much, it was simple but it made me realize that I haven't been used to talk formally.
Discussion and debate \* Discussion is a conversation between two or more people \* Debate is a competition Why bother being polite? It's important to keep in mind that ***discussions*** are not competitions. A ***debate*** is a competition, it is not important to have an open mind. Being polite is the best way of getting what we want. So, interrupting and being polite starts with words like "can. I interrupt you here? / Would it be okay if I add something here? / Let me interrupt you / Sorry for interrupting, but../." Formal settings: pardon me... excuse me, before you move on...

At the opposite to all body think in Colombia, being polite is not synonymous to be coward. That’s why most of my Colombian colleague couldn’t find a job in a American or European company. Lo cortes no quita lo valiente 😃

So if there aren't any other comments, let's move on to the next item... \- Before you move on I'd like to add an important point... \##### friendly discussion \- The Godfather II is a hundred times better than original! \- Sorry for interrupting, but I don't agree with you, the original is the best because... \##### at the bus terminal \- I don't mind sharing, but I hope you like long stories because this is one of them. \- I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need to know where is the ticket counter, can you help me? \##### interrupting a phone call \- It's great to hear your voice after so long! I hope you have plenty of time to chat! \- Let me interrupt a moment, but I am receiving an urgent call from work \##### medical appointment \- Based on your history, it's really important that you avoid eating too much sugar \- Excuse me doctor, but the history you have is not mine
1.B - Pardon me, but I'd like to add an important point. 2.B - Would you mind If I jumped in here? 3.B - Sorry for interrupting, but I need you to help me with this. 4.B - Excuse me, but I need to take another call.
Some other polite phrases you might use to interrupt: "If I could just jump in here for a second..." "Could I offer a quick comment?" "Pardon the interruption, but I think it's important to mention..." "Forgive me for breaking in, but I'd like to contribute."
My solution for the activity: 1. **Pardon me**, but I’d like to add an important point before continuing 2. **Sorry**, but I disagree with you! 3. **Sorry** for interrupting, but I’d like to ask you if you know where the ticker counter is 4. Of course! But **let** me interrupt for a moment, because I have an important call waiting, would you mind waiting? 5. **Can** I interrupt for a moment? I think that your are reading the wrong folder, would you mind checking it out?

Business meetings:
Imagine you are in a business meeting and the person that is sharing or leading the meeting is about to move on from one point to the next, but you have an important point that you want to make, and it has to be now.
You can say something like:

  • Pardon me, but I’d like to add an important point.
  • Before you move on I’d like to make an important point.

Formal settings:

  • Pardon me:
    • Pardon me, I wouldn’t speak so fast.
  • Excuse me:
    • Excuse me, is it possible to share another point of view.
  • Before you move on:

  • Can I stop you there for a moment?

Starting off polite:

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Why bother being polite?

  • The situation demands it.
  • An abundance of nasty discussions are already out there.
  • It helps us get what we want.

What is a debate?

  • A competition.
  • Interested in winning, not changing one’s position.
  • Usually formal.

What is a discussion?

  • A conversation between two or more people.
  • Focused on listening, understanding the other person’s perspective, learning.
  • Usually informal.

In this class you will:

  • Get an overview of discussions and debates.
  • Learn phrases for interrupting politely.

I really enjoyed the purpose of the slides, hahaha, because as a learner, I always look for ways to find the difference in pronunciation between words that don’t have the same spelling. It’s a total headache because this doesn’t happen in Spanish, and I just need to relax and accept that it’s just like this. Maybe it’s not a big deal for anyone else, but I appreciate the teacher’s attention to detail a lot.

I'd use them in my job or when I meet to unknow people

I loved the class, the examples and the worksheet. It help me a lot and it is definitly, by far, one of the best english classes that I have ever take.

Politely interrupting Tips to keep in mind

  • Being polite sends possitive energy to our discussion, and helps us to keep the audience openminded ❤️

  • Start polite: You can use these words to start sentences in a polite way: can, would, let, sorry

    • Can I interrupt for a moment?
    • Can I stop you there for a moment?
    • Would you mind if I jumped in here?
    • Would it be okay if I added something here?
    • Let me jump in here, if you don’t mind
    • Sorry for interrupting, but…
  • Formal Settings: There are some ways of interrupting when involved in very formal situations

    • Pardon me, I would like to discuss this topic with you in more detail
    • Excuse me if I jump here
    • Before you move on, there’s something I’d like to add

In a previous course, they taught me the sentence:
I wonder if I could interrupt for a moment
or i wonder if can i add more information

Excellent class teacher, I learned a lot.
Thank you.
