Participles are essential grammatical tools. While present participles highlight the subject performing the action, passive participles put the focus on the one receiving the action. This is crucial in the transformation from active to passive sentences. For example, in active voice, we say "The car hit the tree," but in passive voice it becomes "The tree was hit by the car." This variation allows you to manipulate the focus of the sentence as desired.
The formation of this type of participle may seem familiar to you if you are practicing passive structures. The key is to follow the being structure plus the past participle:
Let's look at an example: "Being built from the best material available, the new project is already over budget". Here, "being built" indicates that the project is built, receiving the action of being built.
Try to rewrite the following sentence with a present participle in passive voice. The original sentence is: "The mayor felt terrible because he was blamed for the disaster."
Using the structure being plus past participle, the sentence would be: "Being blamed for the disaster, the mayor felt awful".
The structure of the perfect participle in passive voice requires a change of approach. Here we do not use the word being, but start with having followed by been and the past participle:
E.g. "Having been neglected for years, the ancient structure fell to pieces." The structure had been neglected, which led to its collapse.
Rewrite the sentence: "The program could not fulfill its mission because it ended early". The version with the perfect participle in passive voice would be: "Having been terminated early, the program was unable to fulfill its mission".
The practical application of these concepts is well illustrated in interactive exercises that highlight the differences between similar options. Consider the sentence: "They walked the rest of the way home, having been stranded without a car". Here, the use of having been clarifies that being stranded affected their decision to walk.
For practice, another sentence would be, "Having been forced to relocate after the storm, she was ecstatic to have a warm bed to sleep in." The context of having been forced to relocate enhances the meaning of the joy of finding shelter.
Remember that you can find more exercises in the resources section. There, we encourage you to practice, rewrite sentences and participate in discussions to perfect your mastery of the topic. Keep learning!
