In the digital age, having an effective internet connection is as basic as the primary needs in Maslow's pyramid. In fact, without the internet, everyday actions such as studying, working or simply managing our daily lives become a challenge. Technological transformation and the need to stay connected show us the essentiality of the internet, which already rivals our basic physiological needs. Trivial things like forgetting our cell phone at home keep us coming back for it, because that's where our connection to the world is: from bank accounts to online courses and essential applications. A world without the internet would leave us lost!
The electromagnetic spectrum is the secret behind every call, message or internet search we make. Functioning as the invisible highways of connectivity, this vital resource is used by telecommunications companies to connect millions. The different frequency ranges, once explored, span from AM radio to radioactive elements. However, the 700 to 3,500 megahertz band is critically important, as it is where cellular telephony operates. Efficient management of this spectrum can greatly impact the quality of coverage and access to mobile internet services, especially in rural areas.
Colombia faces a huge connectivity challenge: more than 10 million Colombians still do not have adequate internet access. Compared to countries like Chile and Brazil, with 95% penetration, Colombia needs urgent progress. The digital divide is exacerbated by technological differences, where only 41% of lines are 4G, the rest still stick to obsolete 3G and 2G technologies that do not allow a true mobile internet experience. This disconnection becomes a serious barrier to educational and professional growth.
In a world where digital education takes precedence, connectivity translates into access to knowledge. Educational platforms such as Platzi depend on coverage and 4G technology for students to optimize their learning. Without a stable connection, students in marginalized areas of the country are excluded from a number of opportunities that could positively impact their professional future. Ensuring high quality coverage, particularly through the expansion of 4G networks, becomes essential to democratize access to digital education.
It is crucial to implement measures from both the private sector and the government to close the digital divide. The new government could address these concerns by lowering spectrum costs and providing more resources for network expansion. Simultaneously, companies such as Tigo are investing heavily to expand 4G networks to rural locations. Projects such as "Mujeres Conectadas" also contribute by educating in the creative and responsible use of the Internet, empowering key sectors of the population such as rural women.
Although the future points to 5G, which will transform life as we know it, with almost all of our devices connected, Colombia should prioritize the expansion of 4G networks. While 5G will bring only innovation, with the ability to connect thousands of individual devices per person, it is the 4G network that currently meets urgent connectivity needs for education and employment. Financial investment will allocate resources where it is most urgent, and a balance will be made between innovating and ensuring that no one is left behind today.
