Cuando ofreces ayuda, puedes usar una entonación descendente para sonar seguro y directo: Can I help you? Por otro lado, una entonación ascendente suena más abierta y amigable: Can I help you? Sin embargo, si utilizas una entonación descendente-ascendente, puede parecer menos sincero: Can I help you?

En cuanto a pedir ayuda, usar una entonación descendente puede hacer que tu solicitud suene como un mandato: Could you help me? Para sonar más cortés, es preferible una entonación ascendente o descendente-ascendente: Could you help me? o Could you help me?

¿Cómo usar la entonación en diferentes contextos?

  1. Ofrecer ayuda:

    • Can I help you? (entonación descendente para seguridad)
    • Can I help you? (entonación ascendente para cordialidad)
  2. Pedir ayuda:

    • Could you help me? (puede sonar como un comando)
    • Could you help me? (entonación ascendente para cortesía)
    • Could you help me? (entonación descendente-ascendente para amabilidad)

Ejemplos prácticos de ofrecer y pedir ayuda

Vamos a ilustrar cómo la entonación afecta nuestras interacciones. Observa el siguiente diálogo entre dos personas:

  • Excuse me. Could you help me? I think I'm lost.

  • Could you tell me how to get to the National History Museum?

  • Is there anything else I can help you with?

White: Excuse me, could you help me?↘️↗️ I think I am lost.
Black: Of course! How can I help you? ↗️
.
White: Could you tell me how to get to the National History Museum? ↗️
Black: Well, you are almost there! You’re in Washington Station. When you’re out of the station, turn right and head north toward Jackson Street. Then, turn left onto 7th Street. Keep walking north until you reach the end of the street. Now turn left onto North Road.
.
White: Sorry ↗️, so once I’m on 7th Street, I walk straight, and eventually that will become North Road? ↘️↗️
Black: Exactly! And it gets easier. Once you are on North Road, you’ll see a big and beautiful building and an entrance to your left. That’s the Natural History Museum!
.
White: Oh, that does sound easy. Sorry to have bothered you.
Black: Not at all. My pleasure ↘️ .
.
White: One more thing… Do you know any good restaurants in the area? ↘️↗️
Black: Well, if you like meat, there’s a great place nearby called Honest Burgers. It’s just around the corner over Jackson Street. So, once you’re out of the station just turn right and walk for about a minute and you’ll see it on the right side of the street.
.
White: Great! Thanks!
Black: Is there anything else I can help you with? ↘️↗️
.
White: No. I’m good. Thank you very much for your help.
Black: Enjoy the museum!

Thnak you

When we offer help or we want someone to do something for us, we often use intonation to sound more polite. ## **Offering help** ![](https://static.platzi.com/media/user_upload/image-3cbeb71f-bdc3-4155-a783-d96edccb251a.jpg) ## **Asking for help** ![](https://static.platzi.com/media/user_upload/image-59a0b4a5-b646-4e82-97b8-e1dda8d01fc6.jpg) ## **Exercise** * **Mariana A**: Excuse me, could you help me? `↓↑` I think I am lost. * **Mariana B:** Of course!
