Giving and Receiving Instructions

When I was a tecnical suport agent, I gave instructions all the time, now that I’m trainer, I have to receive instructions from my boss.

I often give instructions to my brothers to clean out the house but I use a rising tone like asking and not sounding like an order for them.

How often do you give instructions to others? Do you use a falling or a rising tone?

• I give instructions to some of my co-workers, because in my case I design the protection and control part for the electrical substations, so I have to be clear about what is needed in the drawings, so, I used to use a falling tone with them, however, if they ask me about something I’m not sure, and I have to think about it I use a rising tone, or if they had doubts they also use rising tones.

  I received instructions from others not very often, but when I get them, they use falling tones, if they are not sure about something and they want my explanation, they use a rising tone. Or if they want to confirm something, they use a fall-rise tone.

  I have to be honest, until these pronunciation courses I only got in mind a rising tone, I think it’s something cultural, and obviously, I communicate to others through a rising tone always.

I casually use rising tone, same when I receive instructions from others.
