Inclusion and diversity are fundamental concepts that underpin a more equitable and cohesive society. Social inclusion is the principle that promotes equal opportunities for all people to participate in political, economic, social and cultural life. This means that we all have the same rights and obligations, regardless of our differences. On the other hand, diversity refers to the variety and difference that exists in any group or set, like fruits in a fruit bowl that, although different, are still fruits.
Diversity can manifest itself in different types of social groups, each with unique characteristics:
Affective-sexual diversity: mainly represented by the LGTBIQ+ collective, which includes people whose gender identity or sexuality differs from the established norm. This collective includes lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, intersexuals, queer people and more.
People with disabilities: A distinction is made here between physical and organic disabilities. The former encompass visible conditions such as reduced mobility, while the latter are non-visible disabilities related to loss of function of internal body systems.
Racial and ethnic diversity: Race refers to visible physical and genetic differences, while ethnicity encompasses cultural, historical and religious aspects that may not be apparent at first glance.
Physical or bodily diversity: Includes visible characteristics such as height, build, as well as aspects such as personal style and forms of expression, such as tattoos and hairstyles.
The LGTBIQ+ collective encompasses a range of affective and sexual identities that defy heterocisgender norms. Each letter of the acronym represents an identity:
Physical disability: Implies visible limitations in mobility or motor functions, which can be an obstacle in an environment that is not always adapted to their needs. For example, a person in a wheelchair needs adequate infrastructure such as ramps.
Organic disability: Refers to internal conditions, such as diseases that affect organic functions. Therefore, these disabilities are not always obvious to the rest of the world, but can have a significant impact on a person's life.
Racial diversity is undeniably visible and is based on physical traits such as skin color and genetics. In contrast, ethnic diversity may be more related to shared histories, cultural or religious traditions, and upbringing within a specific community. Both types of diversity enrich and enrich our understanding of the social and cultural environment around us.
Acceptance and understanding of these concepts are vital to building a more inclusive and equitable world. Each social group brings a unique perspective that can enrich our coexistence. So let's celebrate this diversity as we continue to work toward a non-judgmental society where everyone has a voice and visibility. On your path of learning and living, keep your eyes wide open to appreciate the vibrant colors of our multicultural world.
