Every English learner wonders: How can I improve my speaking? A great recommendation to improve your English speaking is writing.
English Language Skills
Learning any language is made up of four basic skills: Reading & Listening, Writing & Speaking. Notice that we group the four skills, in pairs of two. Reading and listening are passive skills, we receive the language through our effort by reading or listening. Writing and speaking, on the other hand , are active skills. It is we ourselves who generate the language with our skills and knowledge.
How will writing improve our speaking?
Writing and Speaking are directly related. Believe it or not, working on and improving the former will give us tools to boost the development of the latter. But, how is this possible?
Both skills require thinking before producing. The difference is that in writing, we have more time.
- More time to plan, think and correct yourself
- More time to think = more time to choose vocabulary
- More chances to recognise your mistakes
- More practice to clarify your ideas
The skills we acquire when writing in English are transferred to speaking.

We should not forget this skill. Learning to communicate in writing greatly supports and complements your language learning goals. It will help you achieve the fluency and confidence you are looking for. You just need to Never Stop Writing (in English, of course).
For speaking, writing is your best friend!
