Every English learner wonders: How can I improve my speaking? A great recommendation to improve your English speaking is writing.

English Language Skills

Learning any language is made up of four basic skills: Reading & Listening, Writing & Speaking. Notice that we group the four skills, in pairs of two. Reading and listening are passive skills, we receive the language through our effort by reading or listening. Writing and speaking, on the other hand , are active skills. It is we ourselves who generate the language with our skills and knowledge.

How will writing improve our speaking?

Writing and Speaking are directly related. Believe it or not, working on and improving the former will give us tools to boost the development of the latter. But, how is this possible?

Both skills require thinking before producing. The difference is that in writing, we have more time.

  • More time to plan, think and correct yourself
  • More time to think = more time to choose vocabulary
  • More chances to recognise your mistakes
  • More practice to clarify your ideas

The skills we acquire when writing in English are transferred to speaking.

Skill transfer

We should not forget this skill. Learning to communicate in writing greatly supports and complements your language learning goals. It will help you achieve the fluency and confidence you are looking for. You just need to Never Stop Writing (in English, of course).

For speaking, writing is your best friend!

The 4 skill in English

  • Reading & Listening
  • Writing & Speaking
At first, I had not considered the connection between writing and speaking. However, upon reflection, the link becomes clear. Both tasks rely on similar logical processes, especially when processing input and organizing thoughts to express them creatively. Speaking can directly enhance writing skills. For example, conversations expose us to a variety of sayings, vocabulary, and sentence structures, which we can later incorporate into our writing. Additionally, practicing speaking helps us think about how to communicate ideas effectively, whether through speech or writing. I firmly believe that adopting a holistic approach to language learning, which integrates writing, speaking, and other skills, is more effective than focusing on one skill in isolation.
  • Rethinking English writing as a skill.
  • Writing is an equally important skill to learn.
  • Writing can help you build fluency and confidence.
  • Writing can support your goals in proving your English level.
  • Learn English in a holistically way.
  • Skills in English are connected and interconnected.
  • In writing and speaking you need to think before produce information.
  • Writing gives you more time to think.
    .
How writing help with the fluency:
  • More time to plan, think and correct yourself.
  • More time to think = more time to choose vocabulary.
  • More chances to recognise your mistakes.
  • More practice to clarify your ideas.
  • For speaking, writing is your best friend.
### **Why focus on writing?** * **Rethinking writing**: Understanding writing as a skill that needs continual development. * **The importance of writing for English learners**: Why writing is as important as other English skills. * **Building confidence and fluency**: How writing can improve your overall fluency and confidence in English. * **Supporting your goals**: Writing helps with bigger goals, like proving your English level in exams. ### **Why writing?** As an English teacher, I often hear students ask, "How can I improve my speaking?" While it’s a valid question, focusing solely on speaking misses the bigger picture. **English skills are interconnected**. Let’s look at this idea in more detail. ### **The four core English skills** 1. **Receptive skills**: Reading and listening * Skills where you receive information. 2. **Productive skills**: Writing and speaking * Skills where you produce information. **Connection**: Writing and speaking are both productive skills, and they share important processes. ### **How writing and speaking are connected** **Planning and thinking**: * Both writing and speaking require you to think before expressing yourself. * Writing gives you more time to plan, think, and choose the right words and expressions. **Thinking in English**: * Writing helps you practice “thinking in English.” This process involves: * Planning your message * Choosing the right vocabulary, nouns, and adjectives * Recognizing and correcting your mistakes through rereading and editing **Clarifying ideas**: * Writing allows you to organize your thoughts clearly, which is a skill that transfers directly to speaking.
In my opinion, writing and speaking are connected. If you don't practice by writing in a notebook or reviewing grammar, it becomes difficult to have a clear idea and create good sentences in English. Also, your pronunciation might not be perfect. Another point is that we need to know how to pronounce each letter correctly in English. For that, constant practice is the best option to achieve a higher level in the language.
I'm agreed with you Ravee, I know it because I studied translation and interpretation at university and I saw how many classmates improved their writting skills while they improved in speking too. By other hand it's true also that there are many people who prefer improving by speaking than writing because they find boring to write.
Teacher thank you for let us know the importance of writing. I totally agree with you, however I wonder how those skills and specificly writing, could be replaced by AI. As a lawyer I can ask the AI to draft a document even in a better way than me. The process of thinking and recognising mistakes for me can take more time, on te contrary, AI can doi it inmediately. My question is how can we use this incredible tool (AI) for improving our writing skills and if AI in a certain moment could be replacing us. Thanks for your feedback.

I really think writing and speaking are connected. I liked hearing this from Ravee because it gives me the impulse to finally create the habit to write every day. In addition, writing has the advantage that I can do it at any time without company. Thanks!

I did a Challenge that consisted in “no voice messages” for a entire week , and my creativity level was like…I was another person. Have y´all notice the amount of bullsh*t that we say just to answer quickly ?

STATUS: Still working on it , both for, EN and ES lol

Writing and speaking are connected, to speak in English you need to think in English before, you think about how you would write what you are about to say and then you speak.

I have never thought about writing and speaking as a cause-effect behavior and that really blew my mind, because when people ask me how one can be fluent in speaking English I just say practice and practice a little more. I personally like writing reviews on books and perhaps that has helped me with fluency, such a great way to put it. Amazing video!

I totally agree with this class!
Thanks to writing, I can speak in English in a good level and I keep improving it. I spent several month writing, and when I started to speak, it was magic!

What is the importance of writing?

  • It helps you build the confidence and fluency in english
  • It complements the other skills
  • You can use english in a whole way
    Why?
  • It helps to improve your english and helps you to interconnect all your english skills
    -Reading and listening
    • Writing and speaking
  • You can transfer skills from writing to speaking by clarifying ideas, correcting yourself and planning what you are going to say

I didn’t know the importance and relation between writing and speaking. It’s interesting how those two skills can help us to increase our fluency, how planning, thinking, and correcting ourselves, can help when we want to improve our fluency. Besides, training our writing and speaking can help us to be more direct in sharing the ideas we want to transmit.

For me, the writting is the most important communications’ skills. I am a journalist. I like so much writting about the principal social problems in my city and country.
I hope that i will can writting my articles in English soon.

😅 This class with a transfer of special skills opens my eyes and gives me some tricks to continue improving my fluency. The last one has been my left side all the time. I get so nervous when I speak so I forget all the words and learned knowledge.

Hello, for me and my experience, I note the difference between really bilingual people is about not just they connect sentences, it’s more about keep the idea and develop on that looking effortless, especially on writing where it’s even more clear to see that repetition.

It won’t be the best contribution but its mine 😅

Great class, no doubt that for developing great fluency you’ve got to grow in other areas as well!

It is interesting the fact that in base of one single skill (Writing) you can develop the other skills.

All skills are connected, if you improve one you’ll improve the others, very interesting

I loved how you organized the ideas and make me understand that writing is very important, everything makes sense, I hadn´t seen it that way before.

I agree, that concept of producing and receiving information it's so important because producing it's more difficult than receiving it, and that why create from inside takes more dedication, time, and practice. I really enjoyed how the professor organized the ideas I had in a coherent way.

In my opinion, When I write in English at the same time I repeat out loud what I write, do you understand me ?
