With each visit to the doctor, you may encounter a plethora of specialized terms that associate medical experts with different fields of health care. Knowing these titles can facilitate a clearer understanding of your doctor visits and the treatment you receive. Let's explore some of the most common specialists and their areas of focus.
Surgeon: They are responsible for performing operations on the body, either to treat disease or internal injuries that require surgical intervention. They are experts in opening the body to specifically intervene in the identified ailments.
Anesthesiologist: This specialist administers anesthesia, a substance that induces a state of unconsciousness so that you do not feel pain during an operation. Their skill is crucial to ensure that a patient is comfortable and pain-free while the surgeon performs the procedure.
Cardiologist: A specialist of the heart, responsible for examining and treating any condition related to this vital organ. From heart rhythm problems to coronary heart disease, the cardiologist is the expert in maintaining heart health.
Otolaryngologist (ENT): Although the term may sound complicated, it refers to a physician who treats the ears, nose and throat. These parts of the body are so interrelated that often a problem in one could affect the others.
Orthopedist: Focuses on treating broken or sprained bones, as well as providing diagnosis and guiding the healing process. They are essential in recovering from bone injuries and ensuring that you return to normal mobility.
Ophthalmologist: The eye specialist. If you've ever wondered why your eyes don't see clearly, the ophthalmologist is the doctor who offers diagnosis and treatment to improve your visual health. A class dedicated to vision explores this field in more detail.
Orthodontist: Although most commonly associated with straightening teeth and putting on braces, their work contributes to the overall wellness of the masticatory apparatus.
