How to express obligation in the present or future with ''have to''?
We can use have to to express obligation in the present and future and had to to express obligation in the past.
For example: I can say I have to work today, referring to an activity that I have to do in the present moment. But I can also express an obligation in the future that I am aware of now, for example.
- I have to work tomorrow, I know that I will have to do this tomorrow.
- If a want to express an obligation in the past, for example, related to work, I can say I had to work yesterday
- This is already in the past, but I had to work yesterday.
What if we need to talk about obligations in the past?
When we refer to obligations we had in the past, we use the structure "had to". This construction is used to relate past events and describe responsibilities that have already been fulfilled. A clear example of this is:
- I had to work yesterday.
- I had to attend a meeting this morning.
- They had to reschedule the appointment.
- She had to fix the error in the report.
- We had to adapt quickly to the unexpected changes.
Asking questions about past obligations
