Let's delve into the fascinating world of comparative adjectives. These are essential for expressing differences between two people or things. Have you ever wondered how to express that someone is taller or something is brighter? Here you will learn how to do it with confidence.
Comparative adjectives are used to point out differences. For example, when we say, "My sister is taller than my brother," we are comparing two people. In English, when dealing with short, one-syllable adjectives, the general rule is to add "-er" to the end of the adjective. Thus, "old" becomes "older".
The mechanics are really simple when it comes to one-syllable adjectives. But, be careful with those ending in vowel and consonant. This is where the magic of doubling consonants comes into play.
Let's look at some interesting cases. For example, when you decide that "wet" should become "wetter", do not forget to double the T. Or, with "sad", the result will be "sadder". So, practicing these rules will save you from spelling confusion.
There are truly few exceptions when doubling the consonant, but it is always important to check each individual word. Practicing with examples such as "taller" or "bigger" will give you certainty about how to apply these rules.
Finally, to consolidate the knowledge acquired in this session, we recommend that you download a worksheet where you can put into practice what you have learned. Don't stop practicing, your command of English will get stronger and stronger! See you in the next language adventure.
