How to prepare for online technical interviews?

Online technical interviews can be challenging, not only because of the technical skills that must be demonstrated, but also because of the digital communication and logistical aspects. Felipe, a student at the English Academy, shares his experience and some valuable tips on how to approach them successfully.

Why are technical logistics important?

When we prepare for a technical interview, we usually think about our skills, the company or meeting the job requirements. However, we cannot forget the technical side, as Felipe assures us. The camera, microphone and internet connection must be in optimal conditions.

  • Camera and microphone: Make sure they are working properly before the interview.
  • Contingency plan: Have an extra microphone or camera on hand. Use your cell phone as a backup if necessary.
  • Useful phrases: Prepare phrases for technical situations. Example: "I'm sorry, let me just have a minute, I'm having trouble with my connection".

What does a positive experience in technical interviews teach us?

Felipe shares his recent positive experience: he was hired by an international company thanks to the skills and confidence acquired at Platzi and the English Academy. This highlights the importance of enhancing language and technical skills to stand out in international interviews.

  • Confidence in the second language: Practice and continuous learning are essential to overcome language barriers.
  • Encouraging activities: Participating in interview exercises prepares and encourages you to apply for challenging positions.

What can be learned from mistakes?

Felipe offers a clear view on the lessons learned from his interviews. He stresses the importance of not trying to control everything and learning from mistakes.

  • Natural conversation: Don't try too hard to stand out; aim for fluid and understandable communication.
  • Acceptance of rejection: It is natural to face rejection. Analyze mistakes and improve based on them.

Why not apologize for the level of English?

According to Felipe, it is crucial not to apologize for your English level during an interview. By mentioning our insecurities, we make our mistakes more obvious and divert attention from content to form.

  • Learning process: We are all learning, and there is no reason to feel embarrassed.
  • Be confident: Keep the flow of the interview going without worrying excessively about grammar.

Felipe's experience reminds us that with preparation, confidence and a willingness to learn, you can overcome the challenges of online technical interviews. Apply these tips and move forward on your career path!

I like the following advice from Felipe: we shouldn’t apologize for our English level. Because we are in a learning process, and we have nothing to be ashamed of. And also, because at the moment that we point out our English level, it will be more evident if you make mistakes. And since we don’t want that the whole attention of the interview, it’s pointing to the way that you communicate, it is better to keep the natural flow of the interview.

I never thought about phases for plan B, seems interesting. I remember had a web cam that did really bad on dark places, mostly when there was significant change on the light of the room. So, i thought say something like “just give me a chance to move on to a new room that is lighter, please”

I like the advice from Felipe, about learn if we get rejected we have to accept it and move forward to continue growing

I think a good idea to prepare for an online interview is to check that all your technical requirements are ready at least 15 minutes before the interview.
