How to answer common job interview questions

When preparing for a job interview, practicing how to answer the most common questions can make all the difference. Here you will find a series of tips based on the experience of Paola, a talented geographer and student at Platzi English Academy, who has shared with us how she deals with some of the most frequently asked questions. If you've ever wondered how to structure your answers, read on to discover practical tips that will help you stand out.

What to say when you are asked to talk about yourself?

In response to this question, Paola presents a clear and concise example. When talking about herself, she highlighted her background as a geographer and her experience in community and educational projects. Here are some keys to your answer:

  • Present your professional experience: briefly explain your background, mentioning previous roles relevant to the position you are applying for.
  • Highlight your strengths: Paola highlights being attentive to details, enjoying teamwork and having an analytical approach, which improves communication.
  • Show your current interests: Express why you are interested in the new challenge and how your skills can contribute to the company.

How to talk about your previous work experience?

Paola addresses this question by focusing on her past performances. Her tips include:

  • Mention previous roles and accomplishments: Like Paola, list your relevant experiences and what you learned from them. For example, talk about projects you led or collaborated on from scratch.
  • Highlight acquired skills: Mention how each experience enriched you professionally and what skills you developed. Paola, for example, talks about her facility in writing and social research.
  • Connect your experiences to the future position: Relate your past skills and learning to the goals and needs of the company you are applying to.

Why do you want to work at that company and why should they hire you?

Here, Paola offers a strategic and focused answer. Some important points she highlights are:

  • Align your values with the company: Express how your personal values and goals identify with the company's mission.
  • Highlight your potential contributions: Make clear what you can bring to the table, such as your communication and teamwork skills, that could benefit the company.
  • Describe yourself with confidence: Paola mentions being empathetic, analytical and detail-oriented, characteristics she considers key to the role.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Self-reflection is vital to answering this question. Paola shares her thoughts, and you might also consider:

  • Clear strengths: Talk about how your responsibility, empathy, and analytical skills enhance your work effectiveness.
  • Weaknesses in the process of improvement: Don't just mention your weaknesses; include how you are working on them. Paola, for example, is improving her time management through courses and daily planning.

Practicing these answers before an interview will give you confidence and allow you to clearly express why you are the ideal choice for the position. Remember that every question is an opportunity to highlight your best qualities and demonstrate that you are the candidate the company is looking for. Good luck in your next job interview!

✨I looked for a job position on LinkedIn and I did the exercise as if I were going to apply there: <https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/collections/recommended/?currentJobId=4040970219&discover=recommended&discoveryOrigin=JOBS_HOME_JYMBII> **Question: Tell me about yourself.** *Answer:* I am an Industrial Designer specializing in Digital Product Design with over four years of professional experience. My journey began in graphic design, evolving from a junior to a senior role before fully transitioning into product design. Throughout my career, I’ve developed strong expertise in Figma, UX/UI design, and user research. I thrive in collaborative environments, having worked closely with multi-disciplinary teams, including developers and audiovisual experts, to create digital solutions such as applications, dashboards, and intranets. My strengths lie in my adaptability, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for crafting intuitive and impactful user experiences. **Question: Now I want to know a little more about your past work experiences.** *Answer:* Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a range of projects that have helped me grow as a designer. One of the most significant projects I worked on was an interactive web application for English learning aimed at Colombian public schools. This project involved collaborating with educators to create engaging and dynamic activities for students from kindergarten to grade 11. Later on, I worked on a crowdfunding platform for non-profits, where I was tasked with redesigning the user interface and improving the user experience to better connect contributors with those in need. I also contributed to a social network for music lovers, which allows fans to interact with their favorite artists and earn from their talents. This experience gave me a great understanding of working with developers and managing the balance between new and old design systems. **Question: Why do you want to work in this company? Why should we hire you?** *Answer:* I am highly motivated to join FullStack because of your reputation for creating transformative digital solutions and the collaborative, employee-first culture you uphold. I admire how the company helps high-impact organizations scale their software development teams and deliver value to their clients. I believe my experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams and managing end-to-end design processes aligns well with your approach. As someone who thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments, I would love the opportunity to contribute to FullStack’s mission by using my skills in user research, Figma, and design systems to create scalable, user-friendly products that exceed client expectations. **Question: What are your skills and competencies?** *Answer:* My core skills include UX/UI design, user research, and a thorough command of Figma and design systems. I am also highly skilled in information architecture and interaction design, which enables me to create cohesive and functional user interfaces. Beyond technical skills, I excel in communication and teamwork, which are essential for collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams. I am proactive in staying updated on industry trends, regularly attending conferences and exploring new tools to ensure my skills remain relevant. Additionally, my adaptability and empathy allow me to deliver solutions that genuinely address user needs. **Question: And what do you consider are your strengths?** *Answer:* One of my main strengths is my ability to quickly adapt to new challenges and work effectively in dynamic environments. I am detail-oriented and excel at balancing big-picture thinking with meticulous execution, ensuring that my projects not only meet high design standards but also deliver tangible results. Additionally, I’m highly motivated to continuously improve my skills and stay ahead of industry trends, which helps me bring fresh, innovative ideas to the table. **Question: And finally, what are your weaknesses?** *Answer:* I tend to be highly analytical, which sometimes leads me to focus more on objective problem-solving than on interpersonal dynamics. To work on this, I’ve been improving my emotional intelligence by taking courses and practicing active listening, so I can better balance the technical and human aspects of my work. ✨
