A wallet is the most important tool for the cryptocurrency world, it is the place that allows us to store our cryptoassets.

To have a wallet, we must have some security aspects and understand which one is best suited to us, since the crypto world is so diverse, that according to our objectives, we can use one or another.

How do they work?

To access them and make transactions, we will need two keys, one public and one private:

  • Public key: It is the key that we share so that they can send us or we can receive any transaction, in the crypto world nothing is in our name, so we must be careful to give this key correctly.
  • Private key: It is a code or password that helps us to store our cryptocurrencies, it is like the key to a vault where you store your money.

Types of wallets

According to our objectives, we need to use one wallet or another.

This does not mean that you should only have one wallet, you can have your cryptoassets diversified, one on hand for small purchases, another one for long term in a very secure wallet, another one for trading and monetizing your cryptoassets, etc.

Within the crypto world there are many types of wallets, in which there are also different tools:

Hardware wallets

It is a device with a software, in which you can store cryptocurrencies.

It is advisable to use this device to store cryptoassets in the long term.

It is also important to keep in mind that if we lose it, we will no longer be able to recover what we had inside the device.

The best options are:

  • Ledger
  • Trezor

Mobile wallets

It is a software that is installed on your cell phone, they are very safe, they give you access to your private keys, but you must be very responsible, because if something happens, or someone can access and you do not have security aspects, your money could be at risk.

It is advisable to use mobile wallets for medium term, and for quick and small transactions.

There are many options, but the most used are:

  • Mycelium
  • Bitcoin Wallet
  • Metamask
  • Trust Wallet

Desktop wallets

It is an application for your computer, in which you can store your cryptoassets, it gives you access to your public and private keys.

  • Rabby
  • Frame
  • Liquality

Paper wallets

It is a system that allows us to move our coins from the online world to the offline world through a QR code.

Exchange Wallets

These are exchange platforms that allow us to exchange cryptocurrencies for local money, or local money for cryptocurrencies.

They do not give you access to your private keys because they are centralized institutions.

It is not advisable to keep your assets in this type of platforms in the long term, you can use them for short to medium term operations:

These are some exchange wallets, each one has its advantages and disadvantages, and it depends on tastes, so I invite you to try them:

  • Binance
  • Buda
  • Bitso
  • Bybit

Lightning Network Wallets

It is a layer created on top of bitcoin, which allows us to send very small transactions at a low cost and quickly:

  • Muun wallet
  • Bluewallet

Dapps Wallets

They are decentralized applications that allow access to the DeFi ecosystem. In which you have access to public and private keys.

These are some recommended Dapps:

  • Metamask
  • Trust wallet
  • Defiant
