What is SEO and why is it important?

In the vast world of digital marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the essential tool for achieving online success. If you've ever searched for something on Google, you probably haven't made it past the first page of results. That's because proper SEO techniques can make sure your website appears right there, where users can see you. So what exactly is SEO? It is the process of optimizing a website so that it appears in a better position in search engines. Below, we will delve into the different facets of SEO with practical examples.

How does on-page SEO work?

On-page SEO consists of applying strategies directly to web pages to improve their visibility and search engine rankings. How can you achieve this? Here are some suggestions:

  • Content optimization: Make sure your content is relevant and contains the keywords your potential users are searching for.
  • Meta tags: Although invisible to the average user, meta tags are crucial for search engines as they provide important details about the page. Try to include relevant keywords here.

For example, you can optimize your website's content and meta tags to improve on-page SEO, which can increase your site's visibility in searches.

What are white hat SEO practices?

In a world full of shortcuts, white hat SEO refers to legitimate and ethical optimization practices that comply with search engine guidelines. Why is it important to focus on these techniques? Because they ensure that your website not only improves its visibility, but also maintains a positive reputation over the long term. Here's a reminder:

  • Always comply with guidelines: Making sure you follow the rules set by the search engines avoids penalties that can hurt your rankings.
  • Focus on quality content: Offering valuable and useful content will attract visitors in a natural and sustainable way.

How does the SERP influence your site's visibility?

The Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is the page you see right after searching for something on Google. The position of your site in the SERP will directly affect its visibility to users. For example, appearing in the top results significantly increases the likelihood that users will click on your website.

How to improve your organic traffic?

Quality organic traffic is the result of applying SEO strategies correctly. Here are two key tips:

  • Relevant and engaging content: Publishing content that really interests your audience will naturally attract more visitors.
  • Focus on the user: The better the user experience on your site, the more time they will spend on it, which also benefits your search engine rankings.

Finally, remember that SEO is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process. You can always re-evaluate and adjust your strategies for better results. Learning is the path to success in the SEO world - go ahead and optimize your digital future!

Although I come from finishing a SEO fundamentals course here at Platzi, I do not remember having "White hat SEO" mentioned. I'm not saying it does not exists, (since they did mention Google's guidelines and best practices) but it is a way to confirm one never knows enough in the tech industry!
