How to deal with idea matching questions on the reading test?

Understanding techniques for tackling idea matching questions is essential to optimize your time and improve your answers. These questions usually present a text on the left side of the screen and a list of headings on the right to pair with different paragraphs. Here we explore how to tackle this type of exercise and maximize your chances of success.

What are the steps for associating main ideas with headings?

To effectively associate the main ideas of a text with appropriate headings, consider the following strategies:

  1. Identify the main idea: Before making hasty decisions, read the first or second line of each paragraph. This line often contains the main idea, and can guide you to the correct heading.

  2. Ignore headings initially: Reading titles at the beginning can lead to confusion with false leads. It is important to focus on paragraphs first to avoid unnecessary distractions.

  3. Discard unnecessary paragraphs: Some paragraphs will already have an assigned title or will not require matching, so they can be discarded to save time.

How to practice these exercises to improve skills?

Constant practice is key to improvement. Here are some tips on how to practice effectively:

  • Do exercises where you practice discarding paragraphs ahead of time.
  • Try to identify the main idea quickly by reading the first few lines of paragraphs.
  • Practice dragging and dropping headings, simulating the real exam experience.

How to approach the feature matching task?

This task is common in assessments that measure the ability to relate detailed information to specific categories. Here are steps to approach these questions effectively:

How to identify keywords and categories?

By following these guidelines, you will be able to effectively identify and match information in the text to the appropriate categories:

  1. Keywords in the table: Start by looking at the keywords present on the right side of the screen (the questions) and search for them in the text.

  2. Match with categories: Once you find relevant information, match it with one of the categories given in the table.

Tips for answering efficiently

  • Look for categories first: Find the categories and relate them to the keywords in the text to focus your reading.
  • Avoid an exhaustive reading: You do not need to read the whole text, only the most relevant parts that are related to the keywords.

Practical examples for improvement

When doing exercises simulating these conditions, observe how the connections between categories and text are addressed:

  • Start with numbered pieces of information, as they are fewer and more manageable.
  • Look for specific examples, such as the invention of black powder and its attribution to the Chinese, and how to articulate this information in its correct category.

Actively engaging in practice and exercises tailored to these formats will strengthen your ability to quickly find the correct information. Continue to develop these skills to confidently approach the exam. Also, consider using additional resources and consult supplementary material to reinforce your preparation.

As feedback for next English courses with practical exercises: IMO, the black slide with the "pause and read" message is not practical, as I have to go back and pause the video if I want to be able to read and answer the questions. I would rather have something like a logo/watermark/... shown on the same screen where the exercise is.
I feel really good. Like the methodology used by the professor. Definitely, this test measures your English level skills and personally for me is way better than the Toefl.

This is a good way to study and understend the form of the IELTS works

Thanks for the tips! Normally, I would read the whole text and get confused haha
Fine so far! Thank you.
I tried support material workshop and besides I came up with almost all correct using these mentioned tips, I'd think reading or gliding over all headings could be better to keep a conception in mind when we read passages.
