How to successfully tackle the reading section?

When facing an English skills reading test, it is crucial to approach the section with sound strategies to maximize your performance. The reading section consists of three passages with a total of 40 questions. Here are practices you can adopt and mistakes you should avoid to make the most of your time.

What should you do?

  • Read the questions before reading the passages. This will allow you to know what information to look for as you read.
  • Do a quick reading of the text to identify the main ideas. This helps you quickly locate relevant passages when answering questions.
  • Look for key words and concentrate on finding that specific information in the text.
  • Time yourself. You have only one hour to read and answer all the questions. Avoid running out of time at the end.
  • If you get stuck on a question, skip it temporarily and come back to it later. It is critical to keep the flow going.

What shouldn't you do?

  • Avoid reading the entire text in detail. Focus on answering the questions, not on understanding every word of the passage.
  • Don't expect the grammar and vocabulary to be easy. This test is designed to challenge you, so don't be discouraged if you encounter unfamiliar words.
  • Do not write more words than necessary. If a question asks for two words in response, limit your answer to that.
  • Don't dwell on trying to understand every word. You can deduce a lot from the general context.
  • Don't waste time looking for options that may not be in the text.

How do you deal with pressure?

  • Don't give up if a question seems impossible. Stay calm and do your best.
  • Avoid panic. A calm approach can make a difference in your performance.

By applying these strategies, you will notice improvements in your comprehension and time management skills. Let us know if you have noticed changes after applying these practices, as it is valuable for your continued development.

In the next lesson, we will address the listening section - we look forward to continuing to improve together!
