How to approach Part 3 of the oral exam?

Part 3 of the oral exam may seem intimidating, but with proper preparation, you will be able to demonstrate your speaking ability in the second language. In this section, you will be expected to answer more complex questions that are loosely related to the topic of Part 2 of the exam. You could face more than three questions, so preparation and flexibility in conversation is key.

How do you develop your ideas in the discussion?

Facing complex questions has its trick. It's critical to anchor your answers to the topic introduced earlier, which will help you expand your ideas in a coherent way. Also, try to:

  • Compare and contrast ideas.
  • Explain and defend your point of view.
  • Predict future trends.
  • Evaluate benefits.

Demonstrating these skills reinforces your ability to handle the second language. Remember, there are no wrong answers; the important thing is to defend your perspective with confidence and clarity.

What structure and vocabulary to use?

Your answers should have a logical structure to flow naturally. Some helpful tips include:

  • Begin with expressions such as "in my opinion" to introduce your perspective.
  • Use varied verb tenses to demonstrate your grammatical mastery.
  • Introduce transitions such as "on the other hand" or "likewise" to contrast and compare ideas.

For example, when talking about an object that brings status, you might say,"One of the things people think gives them status in my country is having a car. Personally, I understand why people think this, but for me, it's just a waste of money...".

What criteria will the examiner evaluate?

Make sure you are familiar with the evaluation criteria:

  • Fluency and coherence: you should speak fluently, avoiding long pauses or hesitations.
  • Lexical resource: Use vocabulary that is appropriate and in context.
  • Grammatical range and accuracy: Demonstrate your ability to use different verb structures and tenses.
  • Pronunciation: Although accent is not the most important thing, clarity and understanding of your words are essential.

Record yourself practicing your answers and use these criteria to evaluate yourself. You can also analyze the responses of others to gain additional perspective and improve your skills. With this practice, you will be closer to mastering the speaking section of the exam - don't give up and keep going!
