Starting to create an argumentative text may seem challenging, but understanding its structure will give you the tools you need to communicate your ideas clearly and persuasively. A well-planned text is not only logical and easy to follow, but it also helps to capture the attention of your readers from the very beginning.
The introduction is the gateway to your text. Here you not only introduce the topic you are going to talk about, but also provide the necessary context and make it clear where you stand on the topic in question. It is essential to include a thesis statement, which is a concise one-sentence statement that summarizes the main idea of your text. Examples of this might be: "Encouraging diversity in the workplace boosts productivity and innovation in the global business environment" or "Adapting to technological advances is crucial to success in the changing modern world of work".
Your argumentative text can follow two main methods when writing your thesis statement: the rebuttal method and the main points method.
Rebuttal method: This consists of presenting your thesis statement in the first paragraph, followed by an opposing idea in the second paragraph. Then, in the following paragraphs, you offer arguments supported by facts and evidence that reinforce your initial idea. For example, "While some argue that prioritizing work can lead to career success, it is crucial to consider the downsides such as burnout and deteriorating relationships."
Main Point Method: This is much more direct. It presents a clear structure that indicates the main points to be discussed throughout the text. For example: "In today's fast-paced world, finding the right balance between work and life has become increasingly important. Maintaining this balance is essential to overall well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of work-life balance and discuss practical strategies."
Once you have your introduction defined, it is crucial to properly structure your body paragraphs:
The conclusion should be a paragraph where you summarize and reaffirm the thesis statement, highlighting the most important arguments. It is essential not to introduce new information in this section, but you can appeal to the reader's emotions by sharing how the topic of the essay has affected you personally.
Finally, always remember who your audience is. Carefully choosing words and phrases that will resonate with them is key to maintaining interest and comprehension. Now it's your turn to practice! Follow the suggested structure and construct an argumentative text that effectively communicates your perspective.
