Adivinar es una habilidad esencial en inglés, especialmente en situaciones donde la información es limitada o incierta. Desde una reunión de trabajo inesperada hasta una simple conversación, saber cómo expresar conjeturas puede marcar la diferencia. Existen dos tipos principales de conjeturas en inglés: la al azar y la fundamentada. Exploraremos no sólo cómo discernir entre ellas, sino también cómo emplearlas adecuadamente en distintos contextos.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre una conjetura al azar y una fundamentada?

Conjetura al azar (Random Guess): Es cuando adivinas sin ninguna base de conocimiento; simplemente decides al azar.
Conjetura fundamentada (Educated Guess): Se basa en tener algún conocimiento del tema, lo que te permite hacer una estimación que suele estar más cerca de la realidad.

¿Cuáles son las expresiones formales para adivinar?

Las conjeturas formales son útiles especialmente en entornos laborales:

Off the top of my head: Se usa cuando tienes una idea aproximada, pero no estás completamente seguro. Ejemplo: "Off the top of my head, I think it would be this."
A rough estimate: Similar a la anterior, se refiere a una estimación aproximada.
Chances are: Enfatiza que, aunque no es certero, hay una probabilidad de que sea cierto.
I can speculate/speculate about: Indica que puedes conjeturar basándote en alguna información.
Surmise from the evidence: Hacer una suposición con base en la evidencia disponible.

¿Cuáles son las expresiones informales para adivinar?

En contextos más casuales, las conjeturas informales permiten flexibilidad y cercanía:

Ballpark figure: Termino derivado del béisbol que indica que es un número aproximado.
I'll bet/I would bet: Expresa una suposición que podría estar dispuesta a respaldar.
It's about/around: Utilizadas para dar una cifra o cantidad aproximada.
A shot in the dark: Significa una suposición casi aleatoria, como intentar acertar a ciegas.
I reckon: Equivalente a "pienso" o "tal vez".
I wouldn't be surprised if: Método para realizar conjeturas sobre comportamientos humanos.

Well, definitely I would use phrases such as: "chances are the company's revenue is going to steadily go up ...", "Rough estimate by the end of the month we'll be releasing the project", and "I wouldn't be surprised if users will complain about it, that's way we should tackle it by ..."
