James: Welcome to our English podcast, hello Jhon.

Jhon: Hi James it is great to be here.

James: you`re right it is great to be here indeed. In this podcast, you´ll learn about useful tips on how to prepare for the TOELF and IELTS, but before we start let’s review the vocabulary we will be used in this podcast. The first word is encouragement, the meaning is to inspire with courage spirit of hope.

Jhon: the second word is underestimated to estimate as being less than the actual size quantity or number.

James: our third word is overthinking this is to think too much about something to put too much time into thinking or analyzing something in a way that is more harmful than helpful.

Jhon: The fourth word is a cliche: something that has become overly familiar or commonplace.

James: And last but not least, Proficiency: this means advancement in knowledge or skills.

Jhon: Our trivia question for this episode is HOW MANY PEOPLE PRESENT THE TOELF TEST ON A YEARLY BASIS? Stay tuned to fill out this answer.

James: Jhon I am so excited about 2021, last week I started preparing my 2021 resolutions. My most important goal is to get ready for my TOELF exam.

Jhon: James that is amazing. I think that is one of the most satisfying goals you can accomplish this new year. I am sure completing this goal will bring success to your personal and professional life.

James: Thank you so much for the encouragement Jhon, preparing for an international English exam can always be stressful.

Jhon: not anymore James I have some interesting and useful tips that will definitely help you succeed in your upcoming exam.

James: Really! Can´t wait to listen to all your tips and recommendations.

Jhon: Great! So let´s start. TIP NUMBER ONE

  • Do not underestimate the test. The format of these exams is very specific. Having an excellent English level does not mean that you know the structure, key components, and soring system.

James: You´re right Jhon. All these elements are decisive to get a good result.

Jhon: Yes James, and that takes me to THE SECOND TIP

  • Do not overthink your answer. It is important to prepare your answer but spending too much time on a particular question will play against you.

James: This is true, as each section of the test has a time limit that varies depending on the task. We need to read carefully and analyze but do not overthink.

Jhon: That is exactly right James each second matters and you might need those seconds in the end, and talking about time let´s jump to our THIRD TIP

  • Prepare accordingly the TOELF and the academic IELTS test to measure your communicative skills in the way that you would use them in a classroom setting. Start by listening to lectures in different subjects such as chemistry or literature, and read academic textbooks that can help you gain more confidence and knowledge on these subjects.

James: This is an excellent tip Jhon, Thank you so much. I never thought of reading academic textbooks. This could really help me improve my English skills.

Jhon: Actually James this is one of the activities less perform by students. so, doing it will set you for an amazing result as you perform your TOELF or your IELTS. Let´s go now to our FOURTH TIP

  • Practice, this may sound cliche but good results will only come with effort and dedication.

James: It is not cliche at all. We invest a significant amount of money on these tests so it is necessary to invest some of our time as well.

Jhon: A great James. What do you think you can do to practice?

James: I think I can set a daily routine in which I dedicate a couple of hours a day to my test preparation.

Jhon: That is a great start James, Congratulations! You understood perfectly, in addition to your study process take our preparation courses, these courses focus on more useful tips that will help you understand the test and provide solid answers.

James: Hey! That is such a great trip, having an additional resource will help me succeed.

Jhon: And don´t forget to know the scores that you need. The international proficiency test is like the TOELF or IELST present your scores in numbers. Those numbers represent a certain level of proficiency according to global standards such as the common European framework of reference for languages also know as CEFR or the global scale of English GSE I`m on others.

James: You´re right Jhon, knowing the score that we need is a must if we want to focus our efforts. Thank you so much for your help. I feel more excited and enthusiastic about my exam. I look forward to following your recommendations and taking under consideration you´re helpful tips.

Jhon: My pleasure James. I am sure you will succeed. Don´t forget to explore our current preparation courses. You`ll be amazed by the useful information you will receive.

James: Hey guys! Do you remember our trivia question? How many people take the TOELF exam on a yearly basis?

Jhon: And the answer is 2.3 million test takers around the world. We can find more than 4,500 test centers. That´s amazing height
.
James: It is indeed

I like the tips that John share with us for have a success TOEFL or IELTS exam. I think that the most importan tip is about don’t spent time in overthink, due to this can limit your time and probably yo don’t have sufficient time to answer all questions.
Is important too, know about the specific format of the exam, read academic textbooks, read carefully and analyze each question and practice a lot, for example in a daily routine or taking current preparation courses.
With this podcast I learned some words that I didn’t know:

  • Encouragement: Is a form to stimulate and incentive about a specific topic or purposes.

  • Underestimate: Think that something is smaller or less important than it actually is.

  • Overthink: Take more time than neccesary to analize something

  • Proficiency: Improve and have the skills to develop something.

I would like to take the TOELF test, however, I still don’t feel prepared, I believe that with dedication and effort in a year I could be ready to take it, dedicating 1 to 2 hours DAILY to learn English to the point that most of what I read or research is in English; as the advice says “Start by listening to lectures on different subjects, such as chemistry or literature, and read academic textbooks that can help you gain more confidence and knowledge on these subjects”.
The answer is 2.3 million test takers around the world. We can find more than 4,500 test centers.

Don’t underestimate the test
Do not overthink your answer
Be aware aboutut time

As a person who already did both exams: TOEFL ibt and IELTS, I should say that both are hard to test your knowledge and they have their own taste. While you stay all the time in front of a computer in the case of TOEFL IbT, in IELTS you have a paper answer sheet and in the moment to show your speaking skills, you’ll do in front of a person. Both have pros and cons but I am 100% agree about the tips! Don’t underestimate the test, don’t overthink your answer, and be aware of time.

Hi

Jhon and James thanks for these tips, in my case I don’t prepared to take some of these exams. Nevertheless, I liked the third tip about reading academic textbooks or listening to lectures. I believe that helps me improve my English.

I have made the TOEFL twice in my life, once in middle school and the second time during university, it was mandatory to finish all english levels. In those times. First time, my teachers made me feel very nervous, they were always saying that it was very difficult. In the end I passed, but I felt sick after the test.
The second time, I felt like it was easier. The teacher I had gave us so many tools to practice that I felt really confident at the moment to take the exam.

I think that practicing and looking for different tools are key to have confidence, which in the end will help you at the test.

Trivia Question: How many people present the TOEFL on a yearly basis?
A: 2.3 million tests taken around the world.

My German teacher always said “I’m getting you ready for the EXAM. You need to learn how to take the test”, which is related to the tips, specially the one about reading academic papers. We may know how to communicate on a daily basis, talk with natives, foreigners, etc., but in the academic field, in which the test is based, is a different topic. Sometimes even, we get anxious and failed or lose points in subject we know.

Very interesting episode, congrats guys, y’all do an important job helping people prepare.
