Uso de "Despite" e "In Spite Of" en Inglés

Las expresiones “Despite” o “In spite of” sirven para expresar el contraste entre dos cosas o ideas. Ambas tienen el mismo significado y se pueden utilizar en la misma situación. Es más común su uso en writing que en speaking y “Despite” es un poco más formal.

Despite = A pesar de

In spite of = A pesar de

Formas de usar “Despite” y “In spite of”

“Despite” or “In spite of” + nouns para hablar de contraste sobre algo:

• I got the scholarship despite my bad performance in the test.
• I got the scholarship in spite of my bad performance in the test.

“Despite” or “In spite of” + verb-ing para hablar de contraste sobre ideas:

• They will travel despite not having enough money.
• He passed the test in spite of not knowing the answers.

Ten cuidado con “Despite” or “In spite of” + that:

No puedes conectar dos oraciones utilizando “Despite” or “In spite of” + “that”. Tienes que utilizar una variación:

“Despite the fact” o “In spite of the fact” + that:

• They have worked together for 2 years, despite the fact that they have never seen each other.
• She got that work in spite of the fact that she doesn’t know that technology.

Practice despite and in spite of

Usa “despite”, “despite the fact”, “in spite” o “in spite of the fact” para completar las oraciones:

• I went to the party ________ the bad weather.
• He passed the exam _________ the fact that he didn’t study much.
• We will travel __________ not having enough money.
