Understanding Until and Till

Let's sort this out once and for all: is there a difference between until and till? Well, let's find out!

Until is a preposition that expresses that something will happen up to a given time. That is to say, some action has started and will end at the point in time mentioned.

For example, we may say:

  1. Can you wait until I finish eating my lunch?
  2. The show will be live until midnight.

So, what about till? Till can be used in all the same ways as until, but it is perceived as less formal. This formality is really the only difference between the two words.

Some sentences in which we might use till are:

  1. I’m going out till the sun comes out.
  2. I'll be out of town till tomorrow.
