Wedding traditions around the world

In Western countries there are many wedding traditions, things like the bride wearing white, an engagement ring, or the classing tossing of the bouquet are regular in all celebrations. Also, brides sometimes have something old, something blue, something borrowed and something new. Although sometimes these traditions change, people continue to follow them when the time for celebration comes. As in Western countries, all other cultures have their own traditions.

In Japan for example, before the wedding there is a dinner in which the bride and the groom receive presents. During the ceremony, the bride and the groom drink sake, they drink it from three different glasses, this signifies that they will be together during the joys and the sorrows of life. Also, it is traditional in Japanese culture to honor and give presents to the groom and the bride’s parents.

Scottish brides and grooms exchange gifts before the wedding, generally the groom buys the wedding dress for the bride and the bride buys the shirt for the groom. Also, when the groom and the bride enter the church they do it with their right foot for good luck. In some regions of Scotland the bride sits on a chair and another married woman washes her feet.

In Mexico, the groom gives the bride 13 coins called “arras” which mean that he trusts her with her finances. When the bride accepts the coins she means that she promises to be prudent and careful with the expenses. The godfathers are two people who are sponsors of some things at the wedding, they sometimes pay for the cake or dinner. They also promise to support the bride and the groom throughout their life together.
