I hate to interrupt but I have a bit of a problem on my hands

I would´ve read even more, but for the pleasant conversation I had with my new friends.
Nevertheless, things have taken a turn for the worse.

What reason did Charles gave for not being able to read more books? Charles said he would've read more book, but for he was enjoying his conversation with his friends.

What happened to his bag? Charles' luggage got damaged due to the careless use the staff gave it. So, the airline was trying to fix it out.

Apparently, the counter said that they had some problems, and maybe the luggage had fallen off. They were trying to fix the issue and deliver it to him.

He said he couldn't find his luggage, so he went to the counter to ask about it

He didn’t read more books cause he was talking to his new friends whereas it was starting take off

He was pretty worried his backpack was lost nevertheless he talked to one guy and the kind guy helped him to fix his problems

Could you help me to undertand why can't be the second option that I used: When I arrive at the lecture hall for the group presentation I felt calm and relaxed. Conversely / Whereas, one of my partner was rather nervous. I knew that if my partner couldn't calm down before we presented It would reflect poorly on me too. Due to this, my plan was to do some simple breathing exercises With him in hopes that he would feel less anxious. Consequently/ Due to this, He was able to relax just in time for us to start our presentation and ours was the best one of the day
