You work as a new manager for an international tech company. You want to bring new ideas and change the culture of the company.
Ideas which you have to consider by changes.
1. Evaluate your current company culture
The first step to take when we are thinking about changes is to check our current situation. As the manager, you have to audit how day-to-day culture looks like. April Armstrong, CEO at AHA Insight, defines company culture as "the unwritten, unspoken norms that drive the behavior of how people work together, coexist together and get things done." and this is when we will start.
What's important for your workers?
What rules do they follow?
How does their daily routine look like?
Here it is recommended to do a survey or a short interview where you can get more knowledge. However, the best source is just observing people, eat lunch with your co-workers, employees, and talking.
When you have analyzed your current stage, it's time to go to step number 2.
2. Connect your values with everyday activities
In the second step, you have to think about specific actions to make your company better. It's important to think:
What kind of company do we want to be?
Who are our workers?
What do we want to represent as a company?
It's time to establish company culture- values and goals.
Employees with a good working environment tend to enjoy what they do. In exchange, they perform much better because of the atmosphere and freedom provided with good company culture. And because your employees want to stay longer, it results in a lower turnover rate, which then leads to better co-worker relationships. Here, it's important to consider where you work and how you work.
Nowadays a lot of companies start working from home and giving more flexibility. The work is about trust and transparency. If you establish a good way of communicating and you listen to their ideas, the whole company will be successful.
3. Have a plan!
How long will it take?
What is our budget?
Who will be responsible for it?
This is a key to success no matter what you do. We identify where the problem is and what we are missing, so now it's time for a plan. This step includes a strategy, timeline, and budget. Remember as well to set benchmarks so you’re better able to track your progress. Additionally, it's important to assign a responsible person for each task. Let's get the team involved!
4. Measure the progress
And here is the last step- Track your progress. The only way to truly know if you are doing well, it's to measure it and assess your progress. Ask your employees about their individual feedback and be attentive to the behavior of your people. The culture = the people, so don't forget that culture evolves as your team and company do, it’s important to continually check your progress and adjust your strategy to the current situation.
