We use appear and seem to say how something looks or seems to look. We usually follow it by a to + infinitive:

Examples:

I appear to have lost my keys.

She seems to work very hard.

They appear to be ready for the trip.

He seems to be quite rich.

Appear or seem

We usually use “appear” to talk about facts and events. Even though we also use “seem” to talk about facts, we also use it to talk about personal feelings and ideas. Seem is often used with a noun:

My bike appears/seems to have broken down (fact or event)

It seemed a good idea at the moment.

Not: It appeared a good idea at the moment.

    • She had sung with him when she was ten.
    • By the time she arrived to her house, her friends had left.
    • The actor Paul Walker died before he had finished Fast and Furious 7.

Veamos algunos ejemplos:

  • The store had already closed by the time he arrived.
  • When I finished the book, the author had written another one.
  • I had already left the city when she called me to meet up.
